Capstone in Applied Practice: Initial DNP Project Ideas
Capstone in Applied Practice
Initial DNP Project Ideas
For this assignment, you will present your initial ideas for your DNP project. Remember, your project needs to explore a critical clinical problem and a possible resolution of the practice problem through application of scholarly inquiry.
Discuss your initial DNP project ideas by including the rationale for the identified clinical problem and its relevance to nursing practice.
Write your initial response in 300–500 words.
Choices for the subject of your DNP capstone project can be easy or for some daunting. The first thing you should do in choosing your topic is narrow down your options by evaluating your experience and areas of personal interest. What types of populations do you like to work with? Where is your passion? This will be important for the reason being you will be working with this topic “up close and personal”……and then in more depth you ever thought possible. In what settings have you worked? If you love community settings, or acute care populations then choose a related topic. Make a list of your populations, practice areas, and medical issues of interest. This is where you realize you are about to learn ” a lot” about a very small aspect of your topic.
Peruse your text chapter 5 “Phenomenon of Interest” (pp. 89-99 for a start). This is week 3 reading, but it will assist your effort for narrowing your topic to a “do-able” possibility.

Week 4 Discussion
The Importance of Your Practice Issue
Provide a summary of your introduction section. Include your inquiry (PICOT) question that will provide direction for your work. Explain your approach to the problem and how your approach will address the problem. Respond to at least two of your classmates.
Remember your introduction is your Capstone Focus.
What DNP Essential does it reflect (it should reflect at least one)
What is the prevalence of the issue you are presenting?
How is your topic/issue defined?
Are there barriers which contribute to your topic?
PICOT…..
Remember your PICOT question drives your literature search (this includes articles you are collecting each week currently). Keep In mind you must be looking for the majority of your literature from USA original studies from peer reviewed journals. So far so good…..but now become more particular in the same way you are narrowing your topic. Remember the past 5 years for your literature choices, but older if they are a “classic” study. Remember to keep your inclusion and exclusion criteria for your project in your thoughts….this includes “sifting” through the 20 or so studies/literature you find.
Take the information from the past few weeks, narrow your focus, and address the directives for this week.

Week 5 Discussion
Definition, Use, and Purpose of Literature Review
As research practices evolved, healthcare practices improved. Today, some of the nursing practices are based on evidence, yet not all forms of evidence provide the best outcomes.
Using the South University Online library, discuss results from two different databases using keywords used in your search (for example, “evidenced-based practice and nursing”). Compare the results generated from each search. Select a few results and evaluate the credibility of the source information.

Week 7 Discussion
Theoretical Concepts

Week 8 Discussion
Sharing the Literature Findings
Discuss your review of scholarly evidence by describing the specific literature you used to develop your literature review. What types of evidence did you find? Describe the empirical evidence; its meta-analyses; literature reviews; and the qualitative, theoretical, or conceptual literature that you reviewed. In addition, explain how the evidence substantiated your review.

Week 9 Discussion
Peer Review
This week, you will conduct a thorough and thoughtful peer review of a classmate’s introduction and literature review that will be assigned by your instructor. The purpose of a peer review is to strengthen your writing. You will also learn how to provide constructive and communicative feedback and how to respond to feedback on your own work. The aim is not to grade your classmate’s paper but to add constructive feedback to the paper in order to help strengthen his or her work.
By Day 3, post your literature review in the Discussion Area for a classmate to review (reviews will be assigned by your course instructor).
By Day 5 conduct a thorough and thoughtful peer review. You may use track changes and add formative comments throughout the document. At the end of the document, give 2–3 paragraphs of summative feedback on the paper. Post this document to your classmate’s discussion thread.
By Day 7, review your classmate’s feedback on your introduction and literature review. If you agree with the recommended changes, incorporate them in the document. Post a response for the classmate. Ensure that you incorporate the rationale for not including any change or clarifications that the classmate may have asked for. Of course, in any peer review process, it is always good to start with a simple “Thank you” to your classmate for taking the time to review and evaluate your work.

Week 2 Project
Literature Review: Five Articles Abstracted onto the Evaluation Table
In Weeks 2–7, you will submit an evaluation table document with five research articles abstracted for your literature review. Although it is expected that a majority of the articles will be part of your final literature review, some may not necessarily be included depending on your evaluation. For example, out of the thirty articles you evaluate during this course, you may only end up including twenty in your final review. The total number of articles you include may also depend on the amount of existing research. Try to shoot for twenty to twenty-five articles as a target for your final review. You will organize the information obtained from the review by paraphrasing and organizing concepts, variables, themes, and data from each article according to the nine headings in the evaluation table.
