CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY (CHINA) Literature or Film Analysis: Routes and Roots
Select a novel, film or other body of creative expression, and compose an analytical essay at least 1,000 words in length discussing themes related to cultural geography. Incorporate into this assignment some of the core concepts of cultural geography previously discussed in your concept review, and add any Unit 4 assignment-related concept definitions, discussions, and relevant quotes to your literature review. Subject material for this paper may be fictional or biographical, current or historical, but not documentary. Common topics in contemporary literature and film typically include one or more of the following elements:
-Inter-generational dynamics, with older generations remaining at home in China while other family members emigrate to other countries
-Tensions between first- and second-generation immigrants dealing with differing perspectives on culture
-Individuals of Chinese heritage traveling to China for the first time, perhaps to explore their cultural roots
-Mobility within China related to rural-urban migration, such as women moving into a city to work in a factory
-Relationships between ethnic Chinese and ethnic minorities, such as a romance between a Chinese business woman and a Tibetan scholar living in Shanghai
The subject matter in historical literature, poetry and other forms of artistic expression vary widely. Composition during the Southern Song, for example, lament the loss of the Chinese homeland to the barbarian invasion. In more recent history, Lu Xun presents brilliant political criticism (often with very dark humor) during the early 20th century.
In addition to discussing the characters, plot, and themes of distance and mobility, the film or novel should be analyzed in a broader context. To deconstruct a text (text, as it is used here, includes anything with socio-cultural meaning, from a novel to a television commercial) requires us to consider the underlying messages, assumptions, omissions, distortions, motives, and agendas within the text. Deconstruction involves reading between the lines.
In terms of a novel or film, think about the intended readership and the messages it communicates. Why is it appealing? What stereotypes are perpetuated and/or dispelled? Is it historically accurate, and if not, what is distorted or omitted, and why? The paper should provide an even balance between both levels of analysis the geographic themes of the text (mobility, place, location, distance and travel) and the deconstructive analysis of the broader context. Include at least three academic sources discussing the novel or film.
