Week 1 Discussion
Describing Organizational Culture
What does organizational culture mean to you? Has it been an important factor when deciding where you want to work? Has the culture of an organization ever caused you to want to leave an organization? Or is it a term that has little meaning for you or that you have not seen evidence of in the real world?
In this Discussion, you will first describe and analyze the culture of an organization you know well, using the concepts and frameworks provided in this week’s Learning Resources.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review this week’s Learning Resources, particularly the Lochner (2020, March 5) video and the Schorin and Wilberding (2020, January 21) readings.
Identify an organization with which you are very familiar—perhaps one where you currently work (or have previously worked). As you consider this organization, think about how you would describe the culture of this organization, being sure to identify specific examples to support your description and reflecting on how this culture did or did not help the organization achieve and sustain success.
By Day 3
Post an analysis of the culture of an organization you know well, to include the following:
Briefly (in 1–2 sentences) describe the organization you have selected.
Identify one or two examples from this organization for each of the three levels of culture described by Lochner (2020, March 5): what we see, what we say, and what we believe.
Next, indicate whether the organization’s internal and external cultures matched or were different, providing supporting examples.
Finally, compare the organization’s vision and values to its actual culture and explain how managerial behaviors did or did not deliberately help shape culture for organizational success.
Refer to the Week 1 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Important Note About Discussion Rubrics: In the peer-to-peer engagement section of the Discussion, the focus of your posts and responses should be to promote quality interaction with your colleagues and Instructor, to further the dialogue on the particular topic, to deepen your mutual understanding of concepts, and to draw out new ideas. Although you are encouraged to provide support for ideas you bring in from other sources, which is appropriate for discourse within a master’s-level classroom, emphasis is placed on the quality of the engagement as noted in the Discussion rubrics, with 40% of your score based on your level of engagement in the ongoing conversation with your colleagues.

Week 2 Discussion
Motivational Junk Food Versus Health Food
Culture and optimal motivation will ideally support and reinforce one another. Managers who resist short-term, motivational fixes and focus on more long-term approaches will create an environment, over time, that helps employees manage their own motivation effectively in ways that benefit the individual and the organization.
In the Optimal Motivation video, (2017), Susan Fowler identified several short-term “junk food” motivational approaches and several more effective, long-term “health food” approaches. In this Discussion, you will reflect on your own experience with these two types of approaches and use that reflection to define action steps you can take as a manager to use long-term motivational approaches with your employees.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review the Optimal Motivation (2017) video from this week’s Learning Resources.
Reflect on your experiences with managers throughout your career.
By Day 3
Post an evaluation of the impact of managerial approaches on employee motivation and engagement. Specifically:
Describe one experience in which a manager used a particular “junk food” approach and one experience where a manager used a specific “health food” approach to motivating employees.
Explain the short-term and long-term results and effects of each approach on the employees, as well as on the organization, if applicable.
Formulate at least three actions you will take as a manager to ensure you are providing motivational “health food” to your employees.
Note: When using specific examples from your professional experience, be sure to disguise the names of any individuals or organizations.
Refer to the Week 2 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Read some of your colleagues’ postings.
By Day 5
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ posts in one or more of the following ways:
Ask your colleague to expand upon the impact of the manager’s actions (either positive or negative) on the organization’s culture.
Propose one or more additional potential results of the effects of each approach your colleague described.
Suggest an additional strategy for how your colleague might use the information they identified to strengthen their own managerial approach to motivating employees.

Week 3 Discussion
Creating a Drama-Free Workplace
The ways in which managers deal with—or fail to deal with—drama and negativity in the workplace have far-reaching effects on the overall organizational culture. The average professional spends a significant portion of their lives in the workplace, so it would be sensible to ensure that it is as enjoyable an experience as possible. Although many people “put up with” toxic work environments, they also frequently leave those environments to be treated better. For those who stay, it can be expected that they would be less committed and connected to their job. Instead of thinking of ways to innovate or cut costs, they might spend their mental energy imagining what they will be doing on their next vacation. Leaders who strive to create a drama-free workplace do their part to avoid that outcome.
In this Discussion, you will recall an instance of workplace drama or negativity you’ve observed or experienced. You will then analyze the manager’s role in the experience and develop specific, behavioral suggestions for ways that same manager could have responded to foster a more positive overall environment.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review the resources from this week focusing on creating a drama-free workplace.
Identify an example—from your own experience—either of a workplace that was characterized by drama or negativity, or a singular incident involving drama or negativity that was poorly handled by management.
Also consider the role of the manager in the situation.
By Day 3
Post an analysis of the role of a manager in influencing workplace culture and formulate some recommended managerial action steps for addressing drama and negativity and improving the workplace culture. Specifically:
Describe, in detail, the situation involving workplace drama and/or negativity.
Interpret the manager’s role in either fueling or permitting the drama or negativity.
Explain how the manager might have behaved differently and propose some recommendations for the manager to foster a more positive, drama-free work environment going forward.
Refer to the Week 3 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Read some of your colleagues’ postings.
By Day 5
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ posts in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a clarifying question about the described situation or the manager’s role in it.
Relate one of your own professional experiences to that of your colleague’s. How did your situation impact you and the other employees involved?
Propose one or more additional recommendations for how the manager in question might have improved their response to the situation, or how they might better support a drama-free, positive work environment in the future.

Week 4 Discussion
Good Coach/Bad Coach
Business Skills for Good IconBoth positive and negative examples of behaviors and skill sets can be useful in helping to develop your professional skills. Take coaching in a business context, for example. If a former manager built up your knowledge and confidence, guided you through difficulties, and ensured that you had the tools to take on future challenges, then you would likely try to emulate what they did if your goal were to become a better coach. However, if a former manager set ambiguous expectations, offered little assistance, and micromanaged your daily routine, then you could also use that experience to be a better coach by vowing never to turn out like them.
In this Discussion, you will explore one positive and one negative experience you have had with being coached by a manager, coach, or other leader, including how you will use this knowledge to further your own development as a coach.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Think back across your experiences of being coached by others, specifically coaches you found particularly effective and particularly ineffective—and why.
By Day 3
Post an evaluation of your experiences being coached by others and how you will use that information to promote your own development as a coach. Specifically:
Describe one effective and one ineffective experience of being coached by others.
For the effective experience, evaluate the coach’s actions and explain how they demonstrated effective coaching. Be sure to refer to this week’s Learning Resources to support your assertion.
For the ineffective experience, evaluate the coach’s actions and explain an action they could have taken to be a better coach. Be sure to refer to this week’s Learning Resources to support your assertion.
Summarize at least three key takeaways from this evaluation for developing your own skills as a coach.
Note: When using specific examples from your professional experience, be sure to disguise the names of any individuals or organizations.
Refer to the Week 4 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Read some of your colleagues’ postings.
By Day 5
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ posts in one or more of the following ways:
Provide a supporting or alternate perspective on your colleague’s example of an effective or ineffective coaching situation.
Share a related personal experience of effective or ineffective coaching and its impact on you individually.
Suggest one or more additional takeaways that your colleague might consider.

Week 5 Discussion
Feedforward for Growth
If delivered effectively, feedback centers on specific recommendations for future improvement and growth. If delivered ineffectively, it focuses only on what was done wrong, with no specific path provided toward a better outcome. Goldsmith (2002) provides an alternative approach labeled “feedforward.” It shares a future orientation with effective feedback but differs from feedback in that the coachee identifies the areas for improvement and asks for ideas from others about how to change the behavior.
In this Discussion, you will initiate your own feedforward experience with your peers and practice providing specific recommendations based on their feedforward requests.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Reflect upon your own professional life, in particular, how you relate to and/or manage others in professional contexts.
Identify one or more behaviors you would want to improve as you work with and manage others.
In preparation for responding to your colleagues, consider how feedforward can help you and others improve their management practices.
By Day 3
Post a description of one behavior in your professional life that significantly impacts how you manage or relate to others and that you would like to change.
Refer to the Week 5 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Read some of your colleagues’ postings.
By Day 5
Respond to two or more colleagues, preferably ones that have yet to receive a response, in the following way:
Propose two suggestions on something your colleague can do in the future to positively change the behavior they identified. Provide a rationale for your suggestions based on your experience and the Learning Resources for the week. Note: All suggestions are to be phrased as feedforward and should not deal with the past. Do your best to provide meaningful advice and remember not to comment on the advice given to you by your colleagues, other than to thank the other party.

Week 6 Discussion
My Best Team Experience
Nearly everyone has been part of a team during the course of their lives. Some of these team experiences may have been positive, some perhaps negative, and some neutral to the point that they are barely memorable. By working together with a team, you are offered unique opportunities for growth as other members will challenge your assumptions and present different perspectives. Think of your experiences being in teams. Which ones stand out as being most memorable?
In this Discussion, you will dissect the characteristics of a positive experience with a team. Then, you will use this analysis to develop clear takeaways for your own development as a team leader and manager.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Think about the best team experience you have ever had. This may be a work
By Day 3
Post an analysis of managerial practices that promote effective, positive, and inclusive teams. In your analysis, do the following:
Describe your best team experience and explain what made it so.
Identify at least three factors that contributed to the positive culture, inclusivity, and engagement of that team. Provide at least one specific example for each factor.
Then, identify two specific practices you could use as a manager to ensure your teams are effective, positive, and inclusive.
Be sure to use the Learning Resources to support your analysis.
Refer to the Week 6 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Read some of your colleagues’ postings.
By Day 5
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ posts in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a clarifying question about your colleague’s description of their team experience or suggested managerial practices.
Suggest one or more additional practices your colleague could use as a manager to promote effective, positive, and inclusive teams.
Relate an example from your own experience of a positive, effective, and/or inclusive team to what your colleague shared.

Week 7 Discussion
Exploring Personal Bias
Earlier in the course, you examined the importance of a diverse and inclusive culture. An inhibitor to this type of culture can be found through personal biases, which people often have without even realizing it. Individuals and organizations can help create a better culture by first acknowledging these biases and then taking steps to address them. It is important for managers to examine their own thoughts, behaviors, values, and biases to ensure they set a precedent for others.
In this Discussion, you will have the opportunity to analyze a time when your personal biases affected your choices. Based on this analysis, you will decide whether you would act differently if faced with a similar situation in the future.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Identify a time in your professional life when your preconceptions or biases affected your behavior or decisions.
By Day 3
Post an analysis of the impact of bias on your professional behavior. In your analysis, do the following:
Describe the situation and the assumptions you made.
Did these assumptions turn out to be accurate?
Identify the impact(s) of your assumptions on you and/or your behaviors, on others, or on the organization.
Examine what you would—and would not—do differently if faced with a similar situation in the future.
Refer to the Week 7 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Read some of your colleagues’ postings.
By Day 5
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ posts in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a clarifying question about the situation your colleague described.
Identify one or more potential additional impacts of the assumptions your colleague made related to their described situation.
Suggest an alternative perspective on your colleague’s situation and/or how you might handle a similar situation differently in the future.

Week 8 Discussion
Handling Tough Decisions in the Workplace
Managers make numerous decisions on a daily basis. For some, the best choice is easy or straightforward to determine. If a machine breaks down, you either need to repair it or replace it. In an increasingly interconnected and complex world, however, the best decisions can often be unclear. Consider where you would stand on the following scenario:
A company has developed a new product for which there is a great demand. The consensus of the leadership team is that the company should capitalize on this opportunity and hike up the price to generate a 300% return on each sale. They feel that, as long as the marketplace is willing to pay for it, then there is no problem, especially since this would help solve recent discussions of layoffs due to declining sales. Only one person in the leadership team voices disapproval of this approach, saying that this is a greedy action that would rip off customers and go against the company’s values. The person feels that—despite what it would mean for the business—the product should be priced to generate a 40% return, which is an average return for the company’s products.
In this Discussion, you will examine a tough decision you have had to make in the past. You will reflect on the factors you used to make that decision and determine whether you would make the same choice if faced with the same set of circumstances again.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Identify a time you had to make a tough decision related to work. This should be a time when the right course of action was not immediately apparent or clear-cut. There may have been differing points of view, each with some validity, or perhaps there were some special circumstances in the situation that made the correct and ethical choice less obvious.
Consider the values, guidelines, and rules that you used to make that decision.
By Day 3
Post a synthesis of a difficult work-related decision you had to make, including how you might approach the situation in the future. Specifically:
Describe the circumstances surrounding the difficult work-related decision you had to make. In your description, include details about the options you were weighing, why the decision was difficult, et cetera.
Explain the guidelines, rules, and values you used to make the decision.
Using the Learning Resources for support, explain how you would approach the situation if it happened again. Would you handle it differently or take a similar action, and why?
Refer to the Week 8 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
Read some of your colleagues’ postings.
By Day 5
Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ posts in one or more of the following ways:
Relate your own experiences to those of your colleague, including similar or different approaches you took to address your own situation and your reasoning for your decision.
Provide an alternative viewpoint on your colleague’s situation or on how your colleague might approach the situation in the future. Include a rationale to support your response.
