SCM 285 Sport & Media History Paper Phase 2: The Story (200 Points)
Your paper will focus on how the media portrayed the event and its participants at the time the event happened. You will be examining the narratives that were published at the time the event happened. This means if the event happened on June 15, 1977, your sources would be from one to five days after June 15, 1977. Accounts of the event that were published months or years later are not appropriate for this paper.
As you read through this assignment, you may discover that you need to locate more articles than you found for Phase 1 to properly complete this assignment. Don’t panic. You still have plenty of time to do more research.

Frame Analysis Team A Newspapers
Examine the articles you have collected and identify 3 major frames that exist within your collection of articles from Team A’s hometown. You should structure this section as follows:
First Paragraph: Identify the frames you located in the articles.
Subsequent Paragraphs: Explain and discuss each frame and provide evidence (i.e., quotes from the articles) that these frames exist. One paragraph per frame.
Frame Analysis Team B Newspapers
Examine the articles you have collected and identify 3 major frames that exist within your collection of articles from Team B’s hometown. You should structure this section as follows:
First Paragraph: Identify the frames you located in the articles.
Subsequent Paragraphs: Explain and discuss each frame and provide evidence (i.e., quotes from the articles) that these frames exist. One paragraph per frame.
Frame Analysis Neutral Newspapers
Examine the articles you have collected and identify 3 most common frames from the neutral newspapers you reviewed. You should structure this section as follows:
First Paragraph: Identify the frames you located in the articles.
Subsequent Paragraphs: Explain and discuss each frame and provide evidence (i.e., quotes from the articles) that these frames exist. One paragraph per frame.
Conclusion
Provide a one-paragraph conclusion to your paper.
Works Cited
Include an updated Works Cited section at the end of your paper.
A Note About Media Frames
You must provide examples (i.e., quotes from the articles) to support your assertions regarding the frames used. DO NOT use quotes from players and/or coaches involved in the event. Focus on what the authors’ wrote, not what the players said. You must also provide your own analysis of these frames.
In order to locate media frames, consider employing some of the following strategies:
- Is there a major difference in how different outlets chronicled the same story? • Was the athlete/team presented in a positive or negative light?
- What types of adjectives were used to describe the athletes/team and the event? • What type of language is used to convey aspects of the story (e.g., “choked” vs. “missed the shot”)?
- What is put first and what left for later in a story?
- What is implied as being important?
- Is there a conflict? If so, what is it?
- Are there other possible other ways of telling the story?
These techniques are not the only way to identify frames, but they may provide you with a starting point.
Other Notes
1) Use subheadings for each section to make your paper easier to read.
2) This final paper should be no fewer than 1,400 and no more than 1,600 words, not including your reference list and cover page.
3) Put the word count at the end of the paper.
4) Use 12-point times or courier font, set your margins to 1-inch, and staple your pages together. 5) Double space your paper.
6) Put your name and page number in the upper right-hand corner of every page except your cover page.
7) Typos and spelling and grammatical errors will negatively impact your grade.
8) You must follow the reference list/in-text citation system in accordance with the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed. or 7th ed.). This book is available at
the college bookstore and at our library. Failure to follow this method will result in a lowered grade.
9) You must include a cover page that contains your name, class number, name of the assignment, and date.
10) Wikipedia and other sources like it are not acceptable sources.
11) Plagiarism will result in automatic failure of the course.
12) It may be possible to start your research two days before the due date and complete your paper on time. Don’t count on it. Start your research today.
13) Do not use first or second person when writing this paper, unless you are quoting from one of your articles.
