The results section of a research paper will consist of displaying the findings of the research project performed. While the discussion section of the research paper will consist of interpreting the results of the research project perform for readers to understand the significance of the findings related to the research problem at hand. Within the results section the writer of the research paper may choose to display the results obtained from the project using figures and tables to clearly display all the data results obtained from the project. Figures such as graphs, charts, or tables to present the data results in an organized and concise manner making it easy for reader to understand and see the data clearly as it is presented. Within the discussion section, the writer of the research paper may choose to outline their points, where they may argue and provide a logical explanation for why their findings are so significant.
The results section will display information from research data that will either support or reject the research papers hypothesis. Subheadings may be used in this section to provide a clear outline of the information that is important for the writer to display, the major findings of the research paper. It is important that within this section the writer explains to the readers the meaning of the data, highlight the important findings of their results, match the results with the research questions from the introduction and provides an answer to those questions. The results section from the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP), which was a study of residents of more than 40 retirement communities and senior public housing units in the Chicago area showed the following information, “The analytic sample was on average 81.4 (± 7.2) years of age, primarily female (75%) and with a mean educational level of 14.9 (±2.9) years, and was demographically comparable to the entire MAP cohort of 1,545 participants (mean age, 80.1 years; 73% female; mean education, 14.4 years). Computed MIND scores from food frequency data on MAP study participants averaged 7.4 (range: 2.5–12.5). MIND diet scores were positively correlated with both the Mediterranean (r=0.62) and the DASH (r=0.50) diet scores. MAP participants with the highest MIND diet scores tended to have a more favorable risk profile for preserving cognitive abilities including higher education, greater participation in cognitive and physical activities and lower prevalence of cardiovascular conditions” (Morris et al., 2015). This paper contained all the elements of a good research paper because their results were displayed in tables that presented the information clearly, explained the meaning of the data, highlight the important findings of their results, and matched the results with the research question.
The discussion section of the research paper is where the writer will display and interpret the answer to their research questions as provided by the results of their research. The writer will use this section to create arguments to support their research conclusion. This section will answer questions pertaining to the meaning behind their result findings, its significance, how the results obtained answered their research questions, whether the results supported their hypothesis or rejected their hypothesis, they will also speak on the strengths and limitations of their study and whether them exists any other research papers the support or contradict their current findings. The first section in this part of the research paper will state the importance of the new findings. The second section in this part of the research paper will contain the interpretations of the results to defend your answers, the strength of the study, the limitations of the study, and an update literature review that validates your findings. The last part of this section will display the significance of the research. In another study the writer posted in the discussion section that “The evidence summarized in this review suggests that higher adherence to the Mediterranean, DASH, or MIND diets is associated with less cognitive decline and a lower risk of AD, which is mainly based on observational evidence. The number of studies examining the impact of the studied diets on dementia risk are scarce and too inconclusive to draw any conclusions” (van den Brink et al., 2019). Within that research study the discussion section explained the importance of the new findings, the interpretations of the results, the strengths, limitations as well as validating their findings.
