Book Report Structure Book Report length must be 700 words minimum. If typed, the font should be 11-12 point Times New Roman
1. Introductory Paragraph (min 5 sentences) a) Title of Report (Try to use a title that captures the essence of your paper rather than simply using the book title.) b) Your introduction should include the author and title of the book. Generally, a strong introduction begins with the general and moves to a specific thesis statement. Your introduction should set the tone for and offer some insight into your paper.
2. The Body (min 5 sentences) a) This will vary based on the type of book you are reporting on. b) For a biography, share the major incidents in the subjects life and discuss how they shaped or impacted his or her life. c) For a non-fiction book, provide an overview of the authors presentation of the main subject in the book and compare or contrast your own ideas regarding that subject. d) For a fiction book, select one of the following options: identify the most important theme of the book and provide an analysis of that theme, describe how the setting contributed to the overall mood, feeling, lesson or theme of the book, complete a character analysis, or compare the conflict and resolution of this book to one you have read in the past (this may include external conflict such as an outside force or internal conflict such as a struggle that the characters experience within themselves). e) Remember to discuss each topic introduced in your thesis sentence in a separate paragraph.
3. The Evaluating Paragraph (min 5 sentences) If not included in your main paper, please include the following as a separate paragraph. a) Discuss your personal thoughts about the book, whether they are positive or negative Include both views for further interest. b) For a Fiction book, include your views of how any conflicts in the plot were resolved. c) Discuss how/if the book influenced your thinking, goals in life, etc. d) Use examples from the book to support your statements. e) Do you agree or disagree with the authors perspective or presupposition?Discuss.
4. The Summary (min 5 sentences) Do you recommend this work? Why or why not?
5. Concluding paragraph (min 5 sentences) a) Your conclusion should leave the reader with some type of parting word. b) Answer any questions that may have been identified such as why should we care? c) Tie everything together and put it in perspective for the reader.
