Introduction
Welcome to Week Two! Last week, we explored some of the basics of the helping relationship; this week, we will look at the issue of working with clients of diverse backgrounds and how we can develop rapport with clients within the field. Our discussion forums this week will be dedicated to examining issues of non-verbal communication and values, and we will delve into our second written assignment for the course-discussing the use of the internet to facilitate mental health care.

This we will be focusing on values.. Our values impact how well we are able to accept others in our practice as human services providers. Consider an early definition of cultural competence. According to Luquis & Perez (2005), cultural competence is the ability to comprehend and esteem values, attitudes and beliefs that vary across mores, traditions and customs. As you can see values, attitudes and beliefs play a big role in are ability to perform culturally competent practice.
The clients we work with in this field will represent a variety the ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In fact many people who work this field will tell you that no two clients are alike. We must be able to use skills we are developing to work effectively with our clients regardless of their backgrounds. The following video discusses what multicultural counseling is about and will help you gain a better perspective on how who you are impacts how you provide services:

Another important topic this week is the use of nonverbal communication and the use of the internet in providing mental health services. Our clients are now receiving services by using the internet. This does present some ethical issues that we must be aware of. While the following video is quite long it does explore this issue in great detail:

The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics contends that social workers should be culturally competent and socially diverse (Cultural Competence and Social Diversity, n.d., para. 14). This includes accepting culture as a broad term and its role, providing awareness and competency around a particular cultural or ethnic group and having an understanding of diversity and oppression (Cultural Competence and Social Diversity, n.d., para. 14). I strongly believe it is the agency and organization’s responsibility to train its staff to ensure the delivery of culturally appropriate services at all times.
Our first discussion this week focuses on the role values play in working with diverse client groups. Our second discussion nonverbal communication and miscommunications that can occur when using electronic sources.
Our written assignment this week explores the use of the internet in working with clients and the ethics associated with this. Please make sure you review the requirements and let me know if you have any questions.

The role values play in working with ethnic diversity is teaching the human service worker how to accommodate to people of different ethic backgrounds and beliefs. Values are whats considered to be things of worth and importance to an individual. That being said, as a human service worker, having open-mindedness should be a strong core value, as we will be dealing with people of all cultures and ethnicity’s and cannot be biased through our own opinions. Working in this field requires us to be considerate of all clients and their beliefs, values, ethnicity’s and cultures, therefore we must not judge others for what they feel or how they go about their lives. Also, working with ethnic diversity will introduce us to other customs and beliefs, possibly teaching us things in the process as well. When taking family systems into consideration to human services, it may be easier to solve issues families have with each other by taking each person’s thoughts and feelings into consideration. Misperceptions are simply misunderstandings, if a family is having misperceptions with each other, having family system therapy may relieve these misunderstandings by having the chance to hear everyone’s thought process as well as having a professional present to dissect the conversation and possibly explain what one is trying to communicate. When things are easily understood, its simple to overcome a disagreement, therefore these type of therapy sessions could be very useful in families who have a hard time with communicating with each other when disagreements and misperceptions arise.

Week 2 Discussion 1
The role value plays in working in the human services field; one will encounter individuals from all walks of life that vary in ethnicity and culture. It is vital to treat everyone with the utmost respect, regardless of their religion or ethnic background. It’s always essential to remember that everyone is not the same. We are all different; we all encompass certain traditions, ways of doing things, and, most important, values. Gaining knowledge about a particular culture and understanding the person(s) you are dealing with will help the encounter smoothly. It also understands that your client’s values will differ from yours, and being culturally aware of it will help you provide the client’s care. It is also essential to understand the client’s values and incorporate the values instilled in you, the helping professional. Understanding cultural awareness is pertinent to helping others from different ethnicities and cultures. Cultural competence means that you know your own biases and reactions to people of religion or background different from yours.
The Family Systems frame can assist in overcoming misperceptions by understanding what makes up the overall family structure. Specific components need to be taken into consideration when considering the family system frame. One part is communication efforts. Without communication in the family system, there is a loss of understanding and the family working together. Human Service professionals should inspire the family to work together and strengthen their bond. A strong family bond will help those in the family who are overcoming obstacles that come alone and challenges.

Ethnic diversity is characterized by cultural diversity as well and social values diversity. People from different ethnic backgrounds hold different values close to their heart and this dictates their behaviors, communication styles, and social conduct. Certain aspects that are considered morally right or wrong in different ethnicities are determined by the values of the different ethnic groups. When working in an environment that is ethnically diverse, it is essential to understand the molar values of each ethnic group. These values determine how members from different ethnic groups interact to create a conducive working environment. The beauty of ethnic and cultural diversity is that it brings a combination of good moral values that complement each other to make a strong team. Ethnic diversity bring with it vital values that when inculcated in the work place, build a diverse, competent team. When a person understands the good values from different ethnic groups, they are able to utilize them to bring cohesion in a culturally diverse team (Causadias, et al., 2018).
The family systems frame is an approach that seeks to solve social issues and misconceptions by understanding the family communication patterns and interactions. The family is the basic unit of the society hence it plays a crucial role in social stability and a secure society. The family systems frame helps scholars and sociologists understand the different communication patterns and interaction in families hence eliminate all social misconceptions. A good understanding of the communication patterns helps in determining the best way to deal with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. This is because the family structure, communication patterns, interactions is determined by the culture, social values, and religion. A clear understanding of the values determining the family communication and interactions helps do away with the various myths and misconceptions about certain ethic groups and cultures (Becvar & Becvar, 2017).
