1.n 1957, two political cartoons, Careful the Walls Have Ears and Right into Their Hands, were published by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Both cartoons provide the peoples view on segregation in the Little Rock schools. When analyzing the cartoons, one can depict the connections between the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War.
The cartoon on the left, Careful the Walls Have Ears, portrays white families expressing anger on the desegregation of Little Rock schools. This is shown through the words on the cartoon that state, Hot words in Little Rock School crisis. Next to the families is a wall that separates them from a man with a globe face. The man can be perceived as shocked/confused through his facial expression and the way he grasps his hands together. One can draw the conclusion that this man represents countries around the world, specifically the Soviet Union.
During the Cold War, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) accused the United States of inheriting the Europeans racial discrimination. This caused the United States to take action in assuring that all lives are equal. One major action that occurred was desegregating schools. Many white citizens were upset at this which is shown through the negative expressions in the Careful the Walls Have Ears comic.
The cartoon on the right, Right into Their Hands, expresses similar emotions on desegregated schooling as the cartoon on the left. The cartoon on the right shows men and women protesting against the communist propaganda. Those protesting are carrying signs that state, whites only, Keep Little Rock schools segregated, and Bless our governor. During the Civil Rights Movement, African Americans fought racial discrimination and segregation. White citizens were furious and feared an increase in communism once white schools officially accepted African Americans. This action created many weeks for protest in front of the Little Rock School (Ch.26, Sec.3).
2.The two cartoons come from the mid-1940s to the early 1990s. They show the paranoia caused by The Red Scare and the technological innovations by the Soviet Union. The Red Scares were mainly caused by Americans concerns about growing communism and that there were communists among them. At the same time as the Cold War, the fight for civil rights grew more fierce than ever. African Americans were seeking full desegregation to fulfill the 14th amendment of equal rights. In these cartoons, Americans were fighting to keep away communism and keep segregation in place.
The cartoons “Careful the Walls Have Ears” and “Right into Their Hands” connect the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War through visual hints and clues. “Careful the Walls Have Ears” has people talking about an incident with nine black children at a school in Little Rock. We can see the adults arguing, while the children just look on. This got the attention of the media and grabbed more, or just as much, attention as the Cold War. “Right into Their Hands” shows the effects of the Red Scares and Americans reactions. The people called for segregation because it is what is normal to them. With communism selling the idea of equality, this would be later tied with civil rights activists trying to achieve equality. Activists such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be labeled as a communist. In 1958, radical anticommunists founded the John Birch Society, attacking liberals and civil rights activists such as Martin Luther King Jr. as communists(Chapter 25, IV).
These cartoons show the fight and protest to keep segregation in place. Specifically citing the Little Rock schools in Arkansas. School desegregation was a tense experience for all involved, but none more so than the African American students who integrated white schools. The Little Rock Nine were the first to do so in Arkansas. Their escorts, the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, protected students who took that first step in 1957(Chapter 25, III).
