What is a Two-Voice Poem
As a group, write a two-voice poem focusing on images of two extremes of social stratification (e.g. “rich” and “poor”) with surprising images (words that describe an image) in the middle of the poem.
What is a Two-Voice Poem?
A two-voice poem, or poem in two voices, is a dialogue between two entities — people, places, things, or ideas (yes, nouns, lol) — that presents two different points of view. This type of poem allows the writer and the audience to compare and contrast these two entities, noticing their similarities and differences.
This poem is meant to be performed by two people before an audience, and often may sound like a dialogue between them. The poetry usually has three columns—one for each of the two persons (left side & right side) reading the poem and the centerline for what the two readers say together at the same time, which the two writers can come up with together, or which a third writer can create. Here is an example of a two-voice poem.Actions
The example is very simplistic! it’s about Batman and Joker. Why am I giving you such a simple example? Because I don’t want to rob you of your creative energy by showing you an example with your topic. I just want you to see the form, in its simplest form. This example should give you an idea of two different voices, and a middle voice.
Your Poem
You will write this poem in your Small Group. Here are instructions again for viewing your group on Canvas.
Your poem will be about two extremes of social stratification, the topic we’ve been studying in this module. And instead of a plain fact or simple observation, see if you can make your poem come alive with a metaphor (remember: is a poem a little machine, a firework, an echo, a dream), imagery, description, simile, and rhythm. It might help to write your idea plainly first and see if you can search for an image or a metaphor or any other poetic way to say that same idea.
Instructions for Groups
In your group, please keep your discussion about roles and due dates on the group discussion board. This is where I go to look to see if are participating because I can see when you posted and who responded and that helps me in case there are any issues with a group, and it also helps me grade the final assignment. Once the group assignment is going strong, you’re welcome to communicate on Pronto or Zoom or wherever else the group agrees to. Please be mindful that we have learners of different levels of comfort with technology so make sure all are in agreement before switching to something Slack or Discord, okay?
Sometimes in the course, there are drops, so your group may have shrunk. You do have roles for this assignment, but the roles will either be one person or two people, depending on how large your group is at this point :-).
- 1-2 people should focus on coming up with images for the list on the left.
- 1-2 people should focus on coming up with images for the list on the right.
- 1-2 people should come up with the images for the middle. The students in the middle go last – after the left and right sides have been filled in. And they are also the ones to turn in the poem! So group: You might want to go with the most responsible, communicative, deadline-sensitive students for this part because they have to write their part after everyone else is done, and then submit it too!
Important Notes:
- If any group member does not participate, the remaining members should take over the task that has not been done.
- There are three due dates for your group. If you miss the first due date, you can still participate, you will just have to work on the middle. Please show up for that! If you miss the second due date, you will get a zero on this assignment (the rest of the group can still earn full credit).
Two Due Dates: July 5 and July 6
Decide if you are going to write the left side of the poem, the right side of the poem, or the middle side of the poem. If there is more than one person per role (left, right, or middle), take turns writing lines. So you don’t have to do write at the same time, the first person to claim the role writes the odd lines (line 1, 3, 5, etc.) and the next person to claim that same role writes the even lines (2, 4, 6, etc.). Let your group know which part you want to write. The first person to “claim” a part on the group discussion gets that part.
- July 5 This due date is only for those who will write the left OR the right side of the poem: Left and right side, finish your parts of the poem (if there are two people doing one side, each should do half the poem) and share them with your group.
- June 6 This due date is only for those who will write the middle of the poem: Middle, finish your parts of the poem, and whoever finishes last will submit. So go ahead and submit!
