Your ePortfolio is a collection of artifacts that showcases your labor in this course in the form of products and processes. It represents your best work and documents your development or growth as a writer.
Think of the artifacts that you select for inclusion as evidence supporting a claim (or multiple ones) that you want to make about what you have learned in this class. Or, as details that enable you to relate a coherent narrative about what you have learned, how you have learned it, and why what you have learned matters to you.
KEY DEFINITIONS
Process Entry:
A process entry has two parts: 1) a carefully selected process piece; and 2) a label (and, if needed for clarity, a brief description) identifying what the piece is.
A process entry should function as evidence in the sense described above. A process piece can be anything produced as part of this class in or out of the classroom, on paper or in digital form, at any stage in the research and writing process. It is not and should not be revised or edited. It is was it is.
Submission Draft Entry:
A submission draft entry has two parts: 1) the submission draft itself; 2) materials documenting your writing process.
The submission draft itself is a draft of a major project that has been systematically and thoroughly revised and edited in major ways in response to instructor feedback provided on the feedback draft and peer feedback via Eli Review activities. It, at the very least, shows evidence that you have made a good faith effort to 1) address any global and local concerns identified as target areas by instructor feedback and 2) edit and carefully proofread to address local concerns relating to clarity, concision, and/or grammatical, mechanical and/or stylistic conventions. The labor represented by a submission draft is significant in terms of time spent and effort expended. In other words, it represents your best work in the course in terms of both process and product.
To fully document your writing process, you need to do three things:
1) provide a link to the feedback file containing KP’s comments and the feedback rubric from the Feedback Draft Assignment
2) turn on track changes before you begin to revise edit the feedback draft and leave it on so that KP can see the tracked changes;
3) compose a detailed description of your revising/editing goals and include it in the file or embed it directly into your website.
Metacognitive Reflection:
The metacognitive reflection accompanying your ePortfolio draft should, at the very least, address both process and product, meet the word counts articulated on the labor-based grading contract you are aiming to fulfill, and be revised for basic organization (ordering of points, paragraph structure) and basic clarity. To develop your reflection,
- describe/explain why you selected the process pieces and submission draft(s) and for inclusion.
- offer a detailed account of your composing, revising, and editing practices–what you did, how you did it, and why as well as the time/effort expended; for the submission drafts in particular, explain in detail what your revising and editing goals and practices were after debriefing the feedback draft assignment(s): i.e. how you approached drafting, what your priorities were, what kinds of feedback facilitated revision and editing; refer to specific examples that illustrate the quality/quantity of revision/editing that you engaged in, what the joys/challenges of writing this piece were, and how you addressed any difficulties or problems that you encountered.
- for the submission draft especially, offer your observations about sense of the strengths/limits of the final product (or, alternatively, what would you do if you had even more time to work on this piece).
- what the process pieces and the submission draft(s) that you have included show about your growth and development as a writer and as a person: i.e. what you have learned–about the subject matter that you have been reading and writing about, about what college level academic reading, research, and writing entails, about who you are as a reader, writer, and researcher.
- reflect on how the labor your engaged in this quarter was similar to/different from what you expected and/or for the kinds of academic research and writing that you have done in the past, who you are as a reader, writer, and researcher), and how you might use what you have learned as you approach writing and research in other contexts (in other classes, in the world of work, and beyond).
Additional Elements: (required for the A and B contract)
Additional elements show how your ePortfolio represents a whole that is greater than the sum of its individual parts. These elements extend beyond the design elements built into templates provided by the website generation platform you are using to build your ePortfolio. These elements can include (but are not limited to) a detailed author bio/profile, the use of a series of carefully selected epigraphs and/or graphic elements that reinforce the story that the ePortfolio is telling, a dedication, a launch page that introduces the ePortfolio to readers and offers a lens through which it can be explored and/or detailed navigational information; a short video or a prologue and/or epilogue that reflects on the form/content of the ePortfolio itself or on the story of your learning that your ePortfolio tells, a slideshow relating to a major entry. Typically, each additional element reflects some labor (time and effort), but not nearly as much time/effort as a major entry.
