ENG 102: Final Essay Assignment Sheet
GENRE: Reflection
OVERVIEW: “Writing is a process of figuring out what you think, not a matter of recording already developed thoughts. Since it’s not possible to think about everything all at once, most experienced writers handle a piece of writing in stages—planning, drafting, revising, and editing” (Hacker & Sommers, p. 3). [footnoteRef:1] [1: Hacker, Diana, and Nancy Sommers. A Writer’s Reference. 10th ed., Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2021. ]
“Generally, the introduction to a piece of writing announces the main point; the body develops it, usually in several paragraphs; and the conclusion drives it home. You can begin drafting, however, at any point. Your introduction will [generally] hook the reader, establish your purpose for writing and your central idea, or thesis” (13). “The body of your essay develops support for your thesis” (14). “A conclusion should remind readers of the essay’s main idea without repeating it” (18).[footnoteRef:2] [2: Ibid.]
DEFINITION: The five-paragraph essay is an academic genre that demonstrates core elements of essay writing. Typically, students use this genre to demonstrate their knowledge of the basic building blocks of essay construction or to respond quickly to an in class writing prompt. While this structure is limited, it can be expanded and used as an organizational guide for longer papers.
THE WRITNG ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES:
Submission type: docx (WORD) or PDF file ONLY.
· Format/Style: The essay should be submitted in MLA format.
· Purpose: The student should reflect on his or her writing experiences in this course.
· Minimum length: The essay length should contain 2+ pages, which means two full pages plus a line or two on the third page.
· Minimum of five paragraphs (Intro, at least three body paragraphs, conclusion)
· Sources: do not use in this essay.
· Formality: This is a first-person point-of-view essay in which you reflect on your own experiences as a writer this semester. However, adhere to all other conventions of academic writing. If you need to reference the instructor, do not use “you” or its variants; instead, use “the instructor” or my name (Nancy Carol Bryant, Ms. Bryant).
WRITING PROMPT:
Reflect on what you have learned since beginning the first-year composition sequence. You can include information from your ENG 101 classes, too, as you reflect on what you have learned, how you have improved, and what you are still working to improve. You can focus on our core qualities of critical thinking, effective communication, and professionalism, but do not feel restricted to those concerns! You may have learned important lessons about time management, communicating with the instructor, asking for clarification, communicating with other students, something else entirely. Be as creative as you like.
NOTE: Remember, we often learn at least as much from our failures as we do from our successes. Sometimes we learn by attempting a skill and doing well, but sometimes we learn by trying and falling short but with the knowledge of what may work better the next time. You do not, therefore, have to focus solely on successes; you can also focus on lessons you have learned about how to improve in the future.
ESSAY WRITING NOTES:
Structure
This essay should have an introduction, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your essay must contain at least three well-developed body paragraphs (8-19 typed lines of text for body paragraphs). The introduction and conclusion should have 6-12 typed lines of text.
Introduction:
Give background information about yourself. What were your academic writing skills like before you began this composition sequence? What were your formative writing experiences like? The thesis sentence should indicate the core of your reflection: what you have learned, improved, wish still to improve.
Body Paragraphs:
Write well-developed paragraphs that follow PIE: Point (What lesson, success, failure from your thesis are you focusing on in this body paragraph?) Illustrate (describe in detail assignments or other features of the course (including your own mindset!) that helped you progress (or that you struggled with). Explain (analyze in-depth how and why the examples from the illustrations have shaped the writer you are today.)
Conclusion:
Sum up your points, reiterate your thesis (not verbatim!) Your conclusion may also focus on where you see yourself going as a writer and what you would like to work on as you develop further.
