Creating Communities of Learners
*
Module 11 Review
- Share your experiment:
- What did you do?
- What did you learn?
- What surprised you?
- Do you have any new insights about how memory develops in children?
*
ACTIVITY
- Collaboration Square Game
Learning Goal
Teachers will understand the importance of teaching others what they have learned and of being connected to people, organizations and resources that help them continue to learn about teaching.
*
Research shows
Teachers who have the opportunity to reflect on and talk about their teaching practice with others are better teachers.
*
Research shows
Teachers who increase their knowledge about how young children develop and learn are better teachers.
*
Research shows
When teachers and parents work as authentic and effective partners, children learn better.
*
Dr. Carollee Howes, UCLA
Quote
Findings from fairly new research are indicating that teachers… who were teaching because of a passion to take care of all the children in their communities and to make their communities better, were incredibly effective teachers.
*
Dr. Felton Earls, Harvard School of Public Health
Definition
Collective Efficacy: When people who live in a defined context—such as a neighborhood, school, classroom or workplace—have a strong sense of a common interest that draws them together; neighbors are willing to intervene on behalf of the common good of the community.
*
Dr. Carollee Howes, UCLA
Quote
We have some work that is under review right now that suggests that being mentored yourself, having a chance to be reflectively supervised and being passionate about working for a whole community also seem to work toward more effective teaching.
*
Dr. Felton Earls, Harvard School of Public Health
Quote
It’s clear from our data that the perception that you do not need other people is a mistaken idea. This may be obvious, but the important role of science is to demonstrate how important things are and how they work. Just as Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity, which was working well before he discovered it, it’s the explanation of why we cling to the earth that is important.
. . .What we are discovering about collective efficacy was not terribly obvious before we started to measure it with some precision.
. . .If genetics play a role, it’s got to be a minor role, because the community effects are very robust.

Major Tasks of Teachers
One of the major tasks of effective teaching is to use the research on teaching and learning in your work with other adults—families, colleagues and others to help them understand that:
*
Relationships are fundamental to teaching and learning.
*
Social, emotional and intellectual learning are inextricably linked.
*
Knowing what others think and feel (theory of mind) is the foundation for teaching and learning.
*
Ongoing engaged learning promotes more effective and satisfying teaching and learning.
*
Module 12 Outcomes
Teachers will understand the importance of being part of communities where learning and teaching are valued and commonplace.
*
Module 12 Outcomes
Teachers will promote learning by…
- Continuing to reflect on and improve their own teaching practice.
- Using the lessons from research in their relationships with others—that is, understanding their own and other’s styles and figuring out what others are thinking and feeling (theory of mind) in building partnerships with the families in their program.
*
Module 12 Outcomes
Teachers will promote learning by…
- Continuing to share what they
have learned with others. - Learning about new resources to support their ongoing learning.
- Helping to create an atmosphere where people are committed to ongoing learning—“learning communities”—wherever they live and work.
*
Get Ready!
- Write down on sticky notes the way(s) you think young children learn.
- Review what you wrote in Module 1 about how young children learn.
- What aha’s have you had? What has changed and what has stayed the same in your thinking? Discuss these changes.
- Post the sticky notes on a wall.
*
Get Ready!
- Sort and discuss all the ways people in your group think young children learn.
- Are there areas of agreement? disagreement?
- Create a list of the ways young children learn and add them to the list on the Mind in the Making Modules Web Site (TBA).
- As a group, identify all of the ways that you as teachers can help support learning in others—children, your colleagues, the families you work with.
*
What Do You Think?
According to a 2004 Ad Council survey, the majority of Americans are engaged in helping children in their communities. Most people who are helping are doing things that are personally rewarding, at the local, neighborhood or community level, such as contributing to food or clothing drives (81%) or sharing special skills or knowledge with children (80%). Forty percent helped at a school, church, temple or children’s program, worked with volunteer groups and almost all volunteered in other ways and at a broader, community-wide level.
*
What Do You Think?
- Most Americans (72%) now say they believe that raising children is the responsibility of parents with support of others in the community and most (97%) believe that one person can make a difference in the life of a child.
- How do learning communities support learning for children?
- How do learning communities support learning for adults?
- How does being in a learning community support your learning?
- Describe your ideal learning community.
*
What Can You Do?
Help build a learning community.
*
Module 12 Tips
You can create a community of learners for yourself when you:
Share ideas and new information with other teachers and parents.
Learn about new resources to support your ongoing learning.
*
Module 12 Tips
You can work effectively with families when you:
Understand that parents–just like
children–grow and change.
Understand that feelings of competition are normal between parents and teachers and move beyond them.
*
Module 12 Tips
Realize that differences in the backgrounds of parents and teachers can underlie friction.
Assume that one of the core jobs of the teacher is to build partnerships with parents.
*
Module 12 Tips
Think about the language you use.
Be the kind of expert who builds the expertise of others.
Create a sense of community with families.
*
Dr. Felton Earls, Harvard School of Public Health
Quote
If we are to show that where you grow up is more important than your temperament or your IQ or your family, or even equally important, that is a major contribution to science.
*
Dr. Suzanne Carothers, New York University
Quote
In any community where we have parents, children and teachers, we’ve got to all figure out ways to interact with each other so we all feel special, feel like we are listened to, feel like someone cares.
*
Dr. Felton Earls, Harvard School of Public Health
Quote
If you’re not strengthening those community resources around how children develop—and these are human resources as well as material resources, the impact of your intervention is going to be less effective.
