Deploy a Website on Azure Cloud
Instructions
Create an Azure Account and a Deploy Webpage on Azure
1) You will land on the welcome page of the Azure environment. The page you logged in to is your cloud environment, where you can lease virtual machines, create databases, run web services, etc.
2) Type in “static web app” in the search box and click in the “Static Web Apps” in the dropdown search results.
3) You will see the page shown below.
4) Open a new browser window. Navigate to www.github.com
5) Create a Github account using your email address. (Complete your account verification step)
6) Navigate to https://github.com/Azure-Samples/app-service-web-html-get-started.git
7) Fork the project by clicking on the “Fork” button the top right. “A GitHub fork is a copy of a repository (repo) that sits in your account rather than the account from which you forked the data from. Once you have forked a repo, you own your forked copy. This means that you can edit the contents of your forked repository without impacting the parent repo.” (Reference: https://www.earthdatascience.org/)
8) Click on the green-colored Code button and click on “Download ZIP” to download the webpage files on your local computer.
9) Go to your download folder and extract the Zip file. Double click on the index.html file to see how the web page you will deploy on Azure looks like.
10) Switch back to the browser window where your Azure account was opened. (Step-4)
11) Click on the “create static web app” button at the bottom of the page.
12) On the “Create Static Web App” page, create a Resource group by clicking on “Create new”. Type any name you want, for example, my_web_applications. A resource group is a container that holds related resources for an Azure solution, such as virtual machines, storage, virtual networks, web apps, databases. Choose a name for your web app. Choose “Central US” as the region. Keep the source as GitHub. Click on the “Sign in with Github” button at the bottom of the page.
13) Once you clicked the button a new window will open. You may need to provide your email address and GitHub password you chose. Click on the green button to allow your Azure account access your GitHub account.
14) Choose the organization (should be only one), “app-service-web-html-get-started” as your repository, and “master” as the Branch. And then, click on the “Review and create” button.
15) You will see the window below. Click on the “create” button to complete the deployment.
16) You should see a result window similar to below. Click on the “Go to resource” button.
17) Click on the URL at the right-hand side to see the deployed webpage. (Note that it may take a couple of minutes to see the webpage)
18) You should see the webpage below, which looks as the one you downloaded on your local computer.
Create an Azure DevOps project
1) Visit https://dev.azure.com and click Start free button.
2) You will not need to sign up for this service. Sign in to dev.azure.com by using your e-mail address.
3) Create a project by typing a name for the project (such as web-project)
4) A project is a grouping for boards, repositories, pipelines, and other aspects of Azure DevOps, as shown below.
This is the end of Lab-1. You will revisit Azure DevOps and use the Boards in Lab-2.
