Inclusion of a written reflection on your work
In a history essay, a good thesis:
1. Directly addresses the prompt.
Ask yourself: Does my thesis directly answer the question? Is it relevant and important?
2. Provides a road map for the paper.
Ask yourself: Does the thesis tell my reader what to expect in the rest of the paper?
3. Makes a contestable claim.
Ask yourself: Does my thesis give a strong argument that others might dispute? In other words, can someone argue against my claim?
4. Is usually a single sentence in the first paragraph of the paper.
Sometimes a thesis may be two sentences. Most importantly, make it easy for the reader to identify your argument right away. In an essay of this length, it probably should be the last sentence of the first paragraph.
Be sure to maintain an appropriate academic tone (no slang, second-person [“you,” “we”], contractions, etc.)
Your introductory paragraph should contain the following:
Opening gambit
Transition from our world to your world (which may be your opening gambit)
Thesis statement (see above)
Your supporting paragraphs should strengthen your argument (or thesis). Think of each paragraph’s topic sentence as providing a sub-claim (mini-argument) in support of the larger argument. Follow the example below (Food for Thought: The MEAL Plan) to guide you in writing your supporting paragraphs. Examples below together make a paragraph with a solid sub-claim in support of the prompt posed above.
An Easy Checklist for Writing a Conclusion
Is the thesis of the paper accurately restated here (but not repeated verbatim)?
It is important to remind the reader of the thesis of the paper so he is reminded of the argument and solutions you proposed.
Are the main points of the paper addressed and pulled together?
Think of the main points as puzzle pieces, and the conclusion is where they all fit together to create a bigger picture. The reader should walk away with the bigger picture in mind.
Do you remind the reader of the importance of the topic?
Make sure that the paper shows change over time and why that change was important.
Is there a sense of closure?
Make sure the reader has a distinct sense that the paper has come to an end. It is important to not leave the reader hanging. (You don’t want her to have flip-the-page syndrome, where the reader turns the page, expecting the paper to continue. The paper should naturally come to an end).
Do you avoid presenting new information?
No new ideas should be introduced in the conclusion. It is simply a review of the material that is already present in the paper. The only new idea would be the suggestion of a direction for future research.
