Bandura’s social learning theory

Modeling Process: It’s common knowledge that kids often mimic adults and peers.

According to Broderick & Blewitt (2019) Social learning theories, which have focused specifically on how children acquire personality characteristics and social skills, consider conditioning processes part of the story, but they also emphasize “observational learning,” or modeling.

1. Attention – humans pay more attention to models that are attractive, similar to them, or prestigious and are rewarded for their behaviors

2. Retention – Must remember the behavior you learned

3. Reproduction – We must be capable of replicating the behavior just observed. Note that a novice may not be developmentally ready to reproduce the action.

4. Motivation – We must be motivated to demonstrate what we have learned. This can be influenced by both reinforcement and punishment.
