Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

Nursing Portfolios
A nursing portfolio is a nurse’s way to exhibit their skills, achievements, and professional experience (Burns, 2018). Portfolios are usually thought of when you think about artists, photographers, and models, but not anymore. Nursing portfolios have become the standard in Australia, and I believe it will not be long until the United States falls in line (Burns, 2018). In an article in Ohio Nurses Review, Margaret Burns (2018) points out that a nurse would want to create a portfolio are self-promotion, evidence of outcomes, and structure and direction. Nurses, during this time, should not just have a portfolio but also an electronic portfolio (e-portfolio). E-portfolios allow nurses to stick out and showcase their talents and expertise (McMillan et al., 2014). A nurse’s e-portfolio can decide between two good candidates who get hired.
Strategies
One strategy that I will be using to showcase my goals in my e-portfolio is showcasing my growth and development. I feel that an e-portfolio is essential to my success as it will be an organized and effective way to showcase my accomplishments. I have accomplished a fair amount in my short nursing career, and with an e-portfolio, I will be able to showcase this to help set me apart from my counterpart in future job interviews. For example, I began by obtaining my Bachelor of Science in nursing, worked in a busy emergency department under a fellowship, received my certified emergency nurse, traveled across the country to do more emergency nursing, helped open a new freestanding emergency department, becoming a flight nurse, and now working on my master’s degree.
Another strategy for my e-portfolio is by showcasing my professional and academic successes. After becoming a flight nurse, I have had the opportunity to help educate my community. I can go out and teach local hospitals and fire departments continuing education and American Heart Association classes like ACLS, PALS, and BLS. Learning more and becoming an expert on specific topics to teach others has helped me tremendously develop my professional growth.
Social Changes
Walden’s mission to “provide a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can affect positive social change” (Walden University, n.d.) speaks loudly to me. I believe that creating my e-portfolio allows me to see how I have grown through my nursing career and points me to where I need to continue to grow. With continued growth and advancement in my career, I will be able to be a small part of the big picture of affecting social change.
