Can someone convince you to buy a new product within 30–60 seconds? Well, that seems to be the goal of average television commercials. You tend to spend a major part of your television viewing time in watching info-commercials that sometimes go on for more than half an hour. There are times when persuasion is unwanted or is detrimental to an individual such as purchasing sea monkeys that turn out to be just brine shrimp or buying a book that portends a cure for every ailment.
- What is the purpose behind commercials that use television as a medium? Provide a rationale for your answer. Based on your course readings and understanding of persuasion, what is the theoretical basis of these commercials? Support your answer with relevant examples.
- In your opinion, can individuals avoid or overcome unwanted persuasions? How? If you were asked to design a training seminar to teach individuals how to avoid unwanted persuasion, what details would you take into consideration and why?
Justify your answers with appropriate reasoning and research from your text and course readings. Comment on the postings of at least two peers and provide an analysis of each peer's postings while also suggesting specific additions or clarifications for improving the discussion question response.

When it comes to commercial persuasion plays a role. The peripheral route to persuasion would be better linked to commercials as the focus is what triggers people rather than what rationalizes people. The theoretical basis of commercials is just like this one, showing what attracts, what works for a certain audience, and “trigger automatic acceptance without much thinking” (Myers, 2018, p. 175). Online influences also play a role in reaching more people. van Reijmersdal, E. A., & van Dam, S. (2020) studied how online influencers reach younger people and their Network building influences many people at once when using it in their content.
Individuals can overcome unwanted persuasion with counterarguments. Counterarguments give individuals “reasons why a persuasive message is wrong” (Myers, 2018, p. 197). If I were to design a training seminar to teach individuals how to avoid unwanted persuasion details for consideration would be what the message is sending, what factors are known about the product that is being advertised, and increasing motivation to depict the message. Doing these things can help individuals be more skeptical about persuasion and learn to look past what either marketing or political tactics are trying to be presented.

The ultimate goal of the advertisement, the preacher, and even teachers is not just to have people’s attention and move on, their goal is a change of behavior. (Myers, 2018). When people think carefully, they rely not only on the strength of persuasion but on their own response to their thoughts. When people think deeply about their change their attitude will persist longer and resist attack and influence behavior. (Myers, 2018). Individuals do not have time to analyze every issue thoughtfully, so we take the peripheral route using the rules of thumbs to trust experts or credible messages (Myers, 2018). Advertisement found that peripheral emotion-based appeals are effective across many products. For persuasion to be successful the message needs to be credible, and the content of the message plays an important role in persuasion (Myers, 2018).
Some ways to overcome persuasion are attitudes inoculation when the individual is immunized against the effect of the tv commercial an, also counterarguments that help the individual to find reasons why the persuasive messages are wrong (Myers, 2018).
To avoid unwanted persuasion one useful strategy that I will teach individuals will avoidance, to protect themselves from the impact of the message, and if they can not avoid then to use contest strategies to argue the message to decrease agreement of the message (Fransen, Smit, & Verlegh, 2015).
