Abortion
I need to prepare PowerPoint presentation, I need some sources and some material that I can use for the presentation. It will be about abortion
On the basis that teaching a topic is surest way of deep-learning it, this assignment requires you to design and deliver a class session on your chosen topic. As a group, you are responsible for researching the material, selecting the content, putting together a PowerPoint presentation, and teaching the material to your classmates.
PowerPoint: 10 mins presentation time per person (3-5 slides approx.)
Reading materials: each group must specify at least 2 readings that connects to your presentation and/or provides relevant subsidiary context (see submission details). These texts may be academic articles, book chapters, newspaper articles, policy documents, speeches, etc. You may reference additional texts within the presentation. The Content section below is a guide for what kinds of areas and questions you should be seeking to address in your selection of materials.
You will be graded on your individual slides but also on how well you work together as a group (see point breakdown below). Its important, therefore, to work together. Communication is key in person or via Zoom, etc. Find student email addresses on the sign-up sheet on BB.
Depending on the number of group members, presentations will run for the first 30-50 mins of the class session, followed by a Q&A with your classmates.
You have relative freedom in terms of the design and content of your presentations, but the pointers below in Presentation Tips give you an indication of things you might want to consider.
Content:
These are ideas; you may add to or adapt these according to your preferences.
– Scope of the issue
– Historical context
– Key concepts/terminologies
– Key moral dilemmas*
– Comparative dimension
– Political/policy dimension
– Legal dimension
– Case studies
*Remember: this course is primarily concerned with questions of Justice and as such the moral dilemmas contained within your topic are paramount. This means thinking through what conflict of interests/rights there may be. Questions to consider: if justice is about fairness what does that require in relation to your topic? If justice is about human flourishing (and perhaps wider environment-level flourishing) what would that mean? If justice is about accountability, how should that be structured and administered? Which groups are harmed, and which groups benefit from particular policies or courses of action? Who gets to decide what should be done, and how is that authority justified? What are the power differentials and if they ought to be adjusted, how and why?
Grading Criteria:
Total: 25%
1. Slide content (graded individually): 15%
– Accurate information
– Strong evaluative skills
– Use of relevant data (academic literature, statistical information, media)
– Aesthetically pleasing
2. Oral presentation skills: 5%
– Clear delivery
– Engaging style
– Understands the material
3. Group cohesion: 5%
– Does the presentation flow as a whole rather than move through disparate sections?
– Evidence that group members have communicated
Presentation Tips:
– Summarizing the presentation (at the beginning and/or end) can be helpful for clarity
– Use less text & integrate visuals
– Short vid clips can help to engage the audience, though 3 mins or less preferable so as not to consume too much presentation time.
– Avoid information overload
– Explain terminologies/concepts
– Handouts can be helpful, though you wont be marked down without them
– Dont rush through the slides or speak too quickly
– As a group, plan the structure of your presentation so it flows well and coherently, and avoids repetition. One approach is to divide up the various sections/subtopics your group is addressing so each person presents on something discrete. Another approach is to discuss the same areas but perhaps from different perspectives. Many other approaches too. Your collective call how to play it.
