Week 6
· Applied Research For her applied psychology course in human development, Keisha is assigned a project where she must apply research findings to solve practical problems or make specific improvements based on human factors. Since Keisha loves and plans to continue to work with children, she knows her project will involve them, but, she wonders, could she apply research findings to a problem involving kids? This week, you learn about applied research. Psychological research is applied in many of our day-to-day experiences in places such as industry and businesses, schools, health care centers, and sports arenas. TO DO LIST:
· Discussion: Participate with your peers in a discussion about applied research and your topic and thesis statement for next week's assignment.
· Quiz: Take a quiz on the concepts covered this week.
· What You Need to Know: Read and learn about topics in applied research.
· Prepare: Choose the scenario that you are going to use for next week's assignment and write your thesis statement.
· Achievement Board: Track your progress this week by visiting the Achievement Board.
· Discussion Overview This week you discuss applied research and an applied research topic that you will write about in your Week 7 assignment.
· Quiz Overview You will complete a 10-question quiz on the course concepts covered this week.
· What You Need to Know Applied Psychology In contrast to basic research, which seeks to gain knowledge, the goal of applied research is to solve real-world problems by building application of the knowledge into the research itself. For example, applied research looks for answers to questions such as How do decision-making opportunities on the job promote job motivation? Can listening to music improve health? Whereas basic research might study motivations for risky teenage sexual behavior, applied research might study an intervention for its effectiveness in reducing risky teenage sexual behavior. The question about music gives Keisha an idea. She recalls how difficult it was for her daughter to learn her multiplication tables last year. She was only able to concentrate when Keisha put on her daughter's favorite music. Could listening to music improve a child's ability to study and learn? Keisha just figured out her project's research question! After this week, you will be able to recognize the application of psychology at work all around you. You will be able to use your knowledge to improve conditions in your environment.
