1. In Chapter 1, define the difference between sex and porn addiction and explain the consequences of sex or porn addiction. Please respond with a minimum of 75 words or more.
Sex addiction would be any type of out of control sexual behavior that causes issues in a person’s life. This could come in many different forms and could present in many different ways. This may require many different types of interventions to help control this issue. In sex addiction, the person becomes addicted to the feeling of being aroused. This does not always mean that the person is addicted to the sexual experience, but instead the way that this makes him feel.
Porn addiction is when a person gets addicted to porn specifically. This may cause the person to have issues in relationships. Many times, a person does not realize that they are addicted to this until it is too late. This can actually lead to issues with erectile dysfunction and many other issues.
2. In chapter 2, describe the classifications of sex addiction. Be specific in describing the three classifications. Please respond with a minimum of 150-200 words.
Opportunity-induced addiction is when a person has the opportunity to watch porn and/or engage in sexually addictive behaviors. In my personal opinion, it is so accessible to people these days, it seems that there are few people who have refrained from watching porn, even if they do not become addicted to it. It is so accessible and so common that people everywhere are able to access this and use it if they want to. The internet has given people a false representation of sex and what sex is in real life. Porn is a complete fantasy that some people become addicted to. I could see how this might be something hard to stay away from after engaging in this for quite some time.
Attachment-induced addiction is essentially a type of addiction that someone uses to cope with certain feelings about something. This could consist of fear of failure, rejection, and or loss. This may also allow the person to bud up walls and keep people from hurting them. This allows individuals the opportunity to protect themselves.
Trauma-induced addiction occurs when a person uses sex or sexual acts to cope with a traumatic event. The person may also never know that the result of the addiction is because of the traumatic event.
3. In chapter three, there is a whole section depicting how addiction starts. Please develop a response on how addictions starts for each of the classifications.
The three classifications are "opportunity-induced addiction", "attachment-induced addiction" and "trauma-induced addiction."
An example of opportunity-induced addiction would be a young male who begins watching porn and begins to fantasize about what sex would be like in this situation. This young man continues to watch porn due to the fact that he has the opportunity to watch it and he enjoys doing so. He will later become so addicted to this and watches it whenever he wants to, including to and from work. He begins no longer watching it in order to masturbate, but just because he enjoys the feeling of being aroused. This later results in this inability to get an erection when trying to engage in sexual relations with his significant other.
An example of attachment-induced addiction would be when a young female engages in sexual acts in order to feel loved and avoid rejection. This would result in the young female later developing a sex addiction and having sex with a significant number of partners because she feels that this is the only way that any of these men will ever love her.
An example of trauma-induced addiction would be a young male who was sexually assaulted by his father and has found his ability to cope with sexual experiences. He uses his current sexual experiences to cope with his trauma induced addiction.
4. According to chapter five of your text. What impact does sex or porn addiction have on partners and relationships? More specifically define the recovery process for partners using the acrostic SURF example. How does sex addiction wreck trust and intimacy in relationships? Please provide a 150-200 word response.
Sex and or porn addiction can cause major issues in relationships and marriages. When a partner engages in this type of addiction it may make the other partner may feel as though they have been cheated on. This can bring up feelings of betrayal and can cause major issues of resentment. Couples may have to have couples counseling and also engage in counseling on their own. Partners must make a constant and consistent effort to work on these issues in order to heal and recover from this type of addiction. This may also require extra moral support from the person that is going through the addiction in order to not relapse.
Classmate 2
1. In Chapter 1, define the difference between sex and porn addiction and explain the consequences of sex or porn addiction. Please respond with a minimum of 75 words or more.
When it comes to addiction of any kind, a couple important factors stood out for me. It is the dependency on a behavior and the relationship to that behavior that encapsulate addiction. “The simplest and broadest definition of sex addiction would be that it’s a term that describes any pattern of out-of-control sexual behaviour that causes problems in someone’s life.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 6). “Porn addiction is a subset of sex addiction but sometimes has very different roots to other forms of sex addiction…” (Hall, 20180816, p. 10). Sex addiction and porn addiction are similar in the sense that they can both be addictions when they interfere with other aspects of life. i.e. Spending so much money on porn sites or on prostitutes to have sex to where you can’t afford your months bills. That would be an addiction. Where they differ is the actions. Sex addiction revolves around physical sex with another partner by any means necessary with little to no control while porn addiction revolves around watching pornography uncontrollably with little to no control.
2. In chapter 2, describe the classifications of sex addiction. Be specific in describing the three classifications. Please respond with a minimum of 150-200 words.
The first would be opportunity-induced addiction where the opportunity to act out sexually or the opportunity to access porn increase the likelihood of addiction by just being available. “…if there was no opportunity for viewing porn or sexual acting out, it would not happen.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 24). In this era with ease of access to porn and even sexual encounters, many fall powerless to these innate desires. The next one would be attachment-induced addiction which revolves around the attachment to the child’s caregiver(s) growing up. When a child has a healthy attachment with their caregiver(s), they will more than likely have a healthier relationship with emotions and traumas. However, if they lack this healthy attachment, they tend to result to other options such as addictions. “But if positive parenting has been unreliable or absent a child is more likely to fear negative feelings and turn to an addiction for comfort during times of trouble rather than to a person.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 26). Lastly, we have the Trauma-induced addiction. With this type of addiction, it is usually derived from some form of traumatic event in which the addiction, (sex, porn, alcohol, etc), acts as a comfort for the individual to cope with the traumatic event. “Addiction may on some occasions be directly triggered by a traumatic event, for example, bereavement, physical assault or sudden illness might instigate a habit of using masturbation for comfort that then leads to an addiction.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 27).
3. In chapter three, there is a whole section depicting how addiction starts. Please develop a response on how addictions starts for each of the classifications.
The three classifications are "opportunity-induced addiction", "attachment-induced addiction" and "trauma-induced addiction."
More specifically, your response should depict a substantive response/discussion on the three classifications and how each classification can contribute to sex addiction. Provide a 150-200 word response.
When it comes to opportunity-induced addiction, it starts with ease of access. When porn, sex, drugs, alcohol, or anything else is readily available, it makes it that much easier to try it out and that much easier to become hooked. “No addiction can exist without opportunity, and in the absence of adequate education and advice, people will experiment, explore and take risks that they didn’t know were there. It is the nature of humanity that we like new and pleasurable experiences and which ones we choose to follow and for how long is dependent on our temperament and our life experience. “ (Hall, 20180816, p. 35). It’s also learned from parents, guardians, friends and so many others, so in a way, individuals pass along coping skills which can lead to addictions. With trauma-induced addiction these are addictions that are derived from traumatic experiences. This can be something acute such as a broken bone, or several smaller traumas such as break-ups, friends getting injured and the like. “Traumas come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are very obvious, such as violent assaults or childhood abuse, but others are more subtle. Some are one off traumatic events, others are experienced over an extended period of time.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 41). In these traumas, one is susceptible to inducing coping skills that they are able to access and something that they’ve seen others do or are even encouraged to do. These coping skills generally can either become addictions, or habit. i.e. Watching porn and masturbating several times a day because you are avoiding sadness and are unable to control your actions would be an addiction. Journaling and going for a walk every time you feel sad in order to help alleviate the pain is a habit. With attachment-induced addiction, it is the first step that leads to addiction or to healthy connections. From the moment a child is born, the attachment process starts where the child and the parents are learning each other and developing a bond. If the bond is a healthy bond, then the child will receive what they need in order to face any advisory they encounter with minimal coping required depended upon the advisory or trauma. However, when the attachment is nonexistent, or unhealthy, the child suffers and will fall into the same patterns as their parents/guardians did and even explore other options. “But without that fundamental bedrock of what psychologists call ‘healthy attachment,’ addiction has a greater chance to take root and flourish (Katehakis, 2016).” (Hall, 20180816, p. 44). After reading all these of these, they play off one another. Attachment starts from birth while trauma happens throughout life and opportunity is there to help with the ease of access. If there is little to no attachment, the opportunity is high for unhealthy coping skills, and trauma is induced, that is a concoction for developing an addiction.
4. The text for chapter four explains how sex addiction is reinforced and maintained. Explain the six-phase cycle. The six phases should be explained in detail. Provide a response of 200 words.
The six-phase cycle is a cycle in place to explain one’s process of addiction. This can also be applied to other areas of life such as stress response. In the six-phase cycle, you have the dormant phase, trigger phase, preparation phase, acting out phase regret phase and the reconstitution phase. In the dormant phase, one has not truly recovered from their addiction, it is lying in wait for a trauma in which it can respond to as it has in the past. It can lay dormant for years even, where an individual in completely unaware of the situation. “What’s important to recognise is that if the underlying causes of addiction have not been identified and resolved, the proverbial sword of Damocles is still hanging overhead. Dormancy is not the same as recovery.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 52). In the trigger phase, it can be something large and overwhelming, or it can be smaller, yet persistent triggers that can lead a person to the next phase. This can be a loved one dying or several nuisances in a short time frame. “For some people, triggers come out of the blue but for others there is either a conscious or unconscious building of tension, and the final trigger may be awaited or even sought out.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 53). In the preparation phase, one is already experiencing this trigger or these triggers and is contemplating options to cope. If one has not processed their addiction(s), they will relapse and fall gradually into the acting out phase. The next phase, the acting out phase, is one in which the person suffering from an addiction resorts to their previous coping skills because they lack other healthier coping skills. “In a nutshell, all addiction is used to manage emotional pain. At the simplest level, it soothes the pain of not acting out, by ending the craving and preoccupation.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 55). After this comes the regret phase where a person can feel remorseful or not remorseful. It depends on the situation and the outcome. If they experienced a situation in which they came out unscathed, then, they’re more than likely to not remorseful. If they did something else where they’re consequences to their actions, they tend to feel more remorseful. “The reaction depends on two things: first, the negative consequences experienced; and second the amount of cognitive distortions employed to reduce those consequences.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 57). Lastly, we have the reconstitution phase where the individual has finished their actions and decide to put things back together or fix anything that has been broken in their blindness addiction. i.e. A person may have sex with a stranger and then go to a doctor to get tested for nay STI’s.
5. According to chapter five of your text. What impact does sex or porn addiction have on partners and relationships?
More specifically define the recovery process for partners using the acrostic SURF example.
How does sex addiction wreck trust and intimacy in relationships?
When a person in a relationship experiences addiction to sex or porn, there is a turbulence of emotions on both ends. The partner who is not suffering from the addiction may feel shocked, devastated and rejected while the person suffering from the addiction could be feeling misunderstood, judged, and persecuted. “The impact on a relationship is obviously devastating. Trust is obliterated in a second and may take many, many years to restore. The person with the addiction has to get into recovery while the partner finds support to come to terms with the roller coaster of emotions they feel. The couple relationship may not survive, or may not feel worth salvaging. Either way most couples need help with communication during the turbulent time before a decision is made, especially if they have children.” (Hall, 20180816, p. 61). The hardest part is the initial step of discovering the addiction to porn or sex. Then, the recovery process depends upon the couple. There is a process for getting through the addiction that is referred to as SURF, or survive the trauma, understand the cycle of reaction, repair self identity and self esteem, and face the future, (Hall, 20180816, p. 64). They couple will go through trials of trust, commitment and restoration. They must slowly survive the processing of the discovery of the addiction; understand the partner and what drives the addiction; start to repair the relationship and the identity of the relationship and then look toward the future of a supportive and healthy relationship, or if they think it’s better to separate.
