Project 2: Literature review
Your paper should not be a series of summaries of the 6-8 texts; rather, it should be organized around main topics that are part of the issue and discussed in the texts. In other words, present your readers with an overview of the ideas rather than the texts. We will discuss how you can “tell a story” about the issues to present a more compelling and coherent overview. In addition, you should include your own stance or critique towards the ideas and/or texts that you review.
Steps
1. Identify a specific topic or issue that you would like to research, within the broad theme of internationalization/globalization of higher education (e.g., the economic motivations of international higher education; supporting international students at U.S. universities; adapting U.S. universities for an international student body) Remember: a more specific topic is almost always a better topic!
2. Identify the 6 texts you will include in your literature review. Three of the texts can be from those we read in class already or from the other texts we’ve provided as possible sources (see Additional Readings in D2L, Module 3). Identify at least three additional credible texts on your issue.
3. Complete the literature review planning activity to identify overlaps and differences across texts.
4. Draft your Literature review.
Partial Draft of Lit Review: DD23- March 18
Complete draft: DD25- March 23
Final due date: DD29- April 1
Technical Requirements:
· 1400-1800 words (not including references page and header)
· APA-style header; Title; Double-spaced; Indent first line of each paragraph; No extra spaces between paragraphs
· APA-style references page
· At least one quotation
Other Useful Guidelines:
· Use first-person pronouns only in moments of “critique/stance”.
· Avoid paraphrases that mostly copy the original words of the source. Use a quote or put the ideas in your own words.
· Make your Lit Review reader-friendly: use transitions between ideas, precise vocabulary, and a variety of sentence structures. Structure your ideas into logically-organized paragraphs.
· You know you are “synthesizing” sources when: 1) multiple sources fit well in the same paragraph and, 2) you have sentences that compare and contrast two different sources.
· Employ conventions of summaries: reporting verbs, evaluative language, present tense verbs, etc.

Assessment criteria
Your Literature Review will be graded according to the following criteria (exceeds, meets, approaches, unsatisfactory, not present/inaccurate):
· Focus & Context: Literature review focuses on a clearly defined issue; intro provides background info that shows readers why the issue matters. Conclusion reinforces focus. Review is organized in a manner that “tells a story” about the issue (20 pts.)
· Synthesis & Attention to Sources: Literature review identifies differences and areas of overlap across the six sources included in the paper, synthesizing texts in multiple places; paper is not merely a “series of summaries”. Writer occasionally offers specific details from sources, demonstrating close reading (20 pts.)
· Conventions: Writer cites sources accurately and appropriately for an academic paper using APA, including use of both integral and non-integral citations. Writer appropriately uses conventions of academic writing such as reporting verbs, quotation and paraphrase, and makes logical decisions with paragraph structure. Language errors do not confuse readers (20 pts.)
· Stance & Purpose: Literature review provides some critique or expresses some well-reasoned stance about the ideas/texts in the review, but consistently pursues the purposes of review rather than argument (15 pts.)
· Research: Literature review incorporates 6-8 appropriate and credible sources on the issue, 3+ of which did not appear in earlier D2L modules (15 pts.)
· Process: Literature review meets the assignment guidelines (length, page layout) including all drafts submitted and shows evidence of revision. (10 pts.)
