Strategic Management

Our text states that it is crucial that “businesses must not exploit and decimate the natural environment” (David et al, 2019). This is especially important for large organizations like Coca-Cola and Pepsi as they are two of the largest distributors of food and drink globally. Nearly every country that I have been to, regardless of how remote the location, I have seen empty plastic bottles littering the landscape. These companies most certainly have a responsibility to lessen the impact on the environment and future generations by putting in place procedures to create a sustainable future.
For the Coca-Cola organization, I have listed six initiatives below:
The 2050 Net Zero Ambition
The reduction of absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030
Sustainable agriculture
A more sustainable supply chain
Supporting Human Rights
The support of Micro-Businesses in the Philippines
For the PepsiCo organization, I have listed six initiatives below:
Decrease of 78 billion plastic bottles by 2025
Investing $570 million into Black and Hispanic businesses by 2025
100% sustainably sourced direct-sourced crops in 28 countries
Replenishment of 3.2 billion liters of water into local watersheds
Delivered 145 Million meals to those impacted by COVID-19
2040 Net Zero Ambition
To be completely honest, the two companies have somewhat similar goals moving forward when it comes to business ethics, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. The stark difference between the two lies mainly in the timelines in which they anticipate being able to effectively integrate and achieve these goals. The move toward Net Zero emissions has a 10-year difference between the companies with PepsiCo attempting to achieve this goal much earlier.
Frankly, these two companies are directing their efforts at what will likely bring them in the most revenue by showing that they care about the issues of the day. Fortunately, this benefits society and the environment moving forward.
Coca-Cola, in their 2020 Business & Environmental, Social and Governance Report, provides several different ways in which they can have a positive impact on the climate.
