I. Introduction

a. Attention Getter: (Grab audience’s attention, keep it short, and be creative. Don't say "Hi, my name is Kim and today I am going to be talking about…")

b. Thesis/Statement of Purpose: (A carefully worded declarative sentence, not in the form of a question, that sums up your speech, but is not repetitive of the Preview of Main Points)

c. Preview of Main Points: (First I will talk about…then I will discuss…and finally I will… )

Transition to 1st Main Point: (A statement that bridges your introduction to your first main point)

II. Main Point 1: (Summary statement of the major you have chosen and why or a few potential majors you would like to explore based on your interests and passions)

Sub-point A: (Coursework and academic plans – Think about and respond to as many of the following questions as you feel would be helpful in explaining your academic plan: What courses will you have to take to complete this degree? What courses are you most excited about? Which ones do you think will present more of a challenge? If you are undeclared, what classes do you believe suit your talents and interests? What about those classes excite you? How might taking those classes help you to identify your major?

How can you find and identify someone who will become a mentor to you? Why might finding someone to support you be important in achieving your goals?

IV. Main Point 3: (Summary statement of the motivational advice you will give yourself in times of challenge and uncertainty)
