Learning from Experiences
· Reflect on the 3 most challenging patient encounters and discuss what was most challenging for each.
I have had different challenging encounters with patients, and the most common ones, in this case, are as follow. The first encounter was with a patient who had disruptive behaviors and was not able to follow instructions. With this patient, it was challenging since there are high chances of medication errors, and the treatment can also fail. The second encounter is withdrawn behavior while taking the patients history. The challenge of this encounter is the inability to create a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan for this patient. The third encounter is telling the patient that she had a Sexually transmitted disease. It was a challenge since I doubted whether the patient would accept the diagnosis and start treatment.
· What did you learn from this experience?
From experience is realized that situations become more difficult when interacting with different patients. The problems can be solved through good communication skills, for instance, observation from a distance and applying non-verbal communication to deal with the situation.
· What resources did you have available?
The available resources for handling the situation were good communication skills and proper application of non-verbal signs. I also had an interpreter to aid inefficient communication.
Likewise, the health facility also provided me with medication materials.
· What evidence-based practice did you use for this patient?
For this patient, the evidence-based practice that applied is good communication skills within the health care facility to help manage patients' diverse conditions and situations.
· What new skills are you learning?
Through interaction with the patient, I learned management skills, especially by applying good communication skills. I also learnt that dealing with some patients can be difficult and annoying, but it is necessary to be patient.
· What would you do differently?
I will propose that I be provided with female assistance since I am dealing with a female to help me find other underlying histories of the patient which she feels uncomfortable sharing out. I will also advocate for a counselor to help me with the patient since she has a withdrawn behavior and can refuse treatment and medication.
· How are you managing patient flow and volume?
Patient management flow and volume have not been that difficult since the hospital has provided me with adequate medical facilities. There is also a waiting bay that allows me to attend to patients one after the other with adequate rooms to admit them.
Communicating and Feedback
· How might I improve on my skills and knowledge, and how to communicate that back to my Preceptor?
Intense reading and its application in real life is the most appropriate way to improve my skills and knowledge. Communicating back to preceptor’s needs information to be decoded and used appropriately by correct communication channels.
· How am I doing? What is missing?
In regards to the communication process and methods, I would say I am doing well. However, what is missing now is applying the communication skills and process in a formal interaction.
· What type of feedback am I receiving from my Preceptor?
The feedback I received from the preceptor was positive since I possess the best
communication skills, which I applied in healthcare following the new knowledge and skills. I can add more effort to enhance my communication in future with the use of a preceptor.
