Re: Topic 3 DQ 1- How helpful would the treatment planning process outlined in this topic have been in resolving problem areas in your life, when you were an adolescent? Comment on why it would or would not have met your needs.
According to our text book, the necessary elements for an effective treatment plan for severe substance use disorder include plan identification, diagnosis, symptoms / behavior, treatment goals, treatment objectives, and interventions (Stevens & Smith, 2013). I believe that following these steps would help resolve problems in any area or time in a person’s life.
My adolescent years were fairly uneventful, so I cannot see this treatment plan process helping much back then. I never used alcohol or any other substances until later in life. I had normal friends, a normal girlfriend, and my parents were happily married. However, my normal, almost perfect life changed dramatically in my 30s. My parents got divorced after 34 years of marriage. I also got divorced. To make things even worse, after multiple surgeries, I became addicted to my prescription opiates.
Following this treatment planning process would have been very helpful during my problematic 30s. Identifying the problem, having a correct diagnosis, and understanding my symptoms and behaviors would have made treatment, goals, and the interventions much easier to successfully complete.

Good evening George,

The treatment planning process outlined would have been beneficial in resolving problem areas in my life as an adolescent. I dealt with obesity and depression throughout my adolescent years. I was consuming over the counter laxatives to lose weight. According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) (1999) describes that in the history of substance use includes over-the-counter drugs, the age of first use, frequency, length, and pattern of use. The Comprehensive Assessment would have accessed depression, social and behavioral issues that I was undergoing. I would have gotten the help I needed earlier to address the psychosocial needs and problems I was experiencing. Substance Use Disorders affect one’s interpersonal, intrapersonal, hobbies, physical damage, and school performance (SAMSHA, 1999).

Re: Topic 3 DQ 1
I think I would have very much benefited from the treatment planning process as an adolescent. Substance use was not a factor, but I went through grieving a major loss and into depression for many years. I still actually struggle with it and did not receive help until freshman year of college. The school I attended in my adolescent years actually suggested to my family that I needed counseling, but culturally counseling is seen as being for “crazy people” or something black people do not do. It is unfortunate that a lot of the minorities believe this. According to many studies, researchers have repeatedly demonstrated differences in rates and patterns of mental health treatment for African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans (Chun-Chung Chow, Jaffee & Snowden, 2003). Had I received treatment, I think coming into adulthood, I would have been in a better place. I was not taught to openly share my feelings and express myself so as a result, I masked it. I experienced bouts of sadness and did not have a label for it. I didn’t know why I was feeling what I was feeling. Treatment would have helped me process my feelings and learn coping strategies a lot sooner. Now I feel like it has been more accepted in my family but is still not the go to unfortunately. But at least counseling is starting to become less of a bad stigma and more accepted.

Topic 3 DQ#2 Does treatment planning involve so much paperwork and time that it prevents counselors from providing adequate attention to clients?
Does treatment planning involve so much paperwork and time that it prevents counselors from providing adeqate attention to the client?
In working with the client and and doing the treatment plan involving the client is essential. This time provides the counselor adequate time to get to know the client and is an important part of the treatment process. The counselor can help the client identify areas of goals and objective, interventions, behaviors, and outcomes to treatment. The client and counselor can develop a treatment plan that involves the goals and objectives to move forward in self care and their sobriety (Stevens, S. P. & Smith, R. 2012).
The counselor can utilize the time with the client to develop a solid foundation to treatment of what the client's needs are and how to work with the clients behaviors and adress other areas of concern such as legal, family, get releases signed, and answer any questions that the client may be having or concerns (Stevens, S. P. & Smith, R. 2012).
The treatment plan does take and considerable amount of time to do with the client and to address all the clients needs in one sitting if the client is no sober or still under the influence, but this is the time to start building the foundation and explaining the change process, schedual days of treatment and getting more family involved. This helps build the treatment plan specific to the clients needs to treatment and recovery (Stevens, S.P. & Smith, R. 2012).

Good evening Dorinda
Although treatment planning required lots of paperwork and time, it is a necessary part of formulating and recording the patient’s medical record. It is important for mental health practitioners to make a record of the client treatment to record for their future care providers. This provides the client with the best care which will help them not only in the present but also in the future. It is very important for the therapist to accurately assess which level of care will serve the client’s needs fully and the treatment planning process allows for this. “The comprehensive assessment confirms the presence of a problem and helps illuminate other problems connected with the adolescent's substance use disorder. Comprehensive information can be used to develop an appropriate set of interventions. It also also the therapist to determine the specific treatment needs of the client if substance abuse or substance dependence is confirmed, so that limited resources are not misdirected” (CSAT, 1999). It seems that the client assessment criteria chart provided by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is a very helpful tool to assess which level of care is needed. The written report also is meant to “identify and accurately diagnoses the severity of the use, identify factors that contribute to or are related to the substance use disorder, identify a corrective treatment plan to address these problem areas, detail a plan to ensure that the treatment plan is implemented and monitored to its conclusion and makes recommendations for referral to agencies or services” (CSAT, 1999). Also, it is important to accurately record and maintain a current record of the treatment services that minors receive.
