Exegetical Position Paper
The book of Genesis presents many interpretative issues. These issues, furthermore, have important implications for how we understand Genesis, and thinking through them helps you develop your skills as an exegete of Scripture. In this assignment you will outline the evidence and problems with each possible position of an interpretative issue of your choice. Doing so will help you to develop analytic skills and the ability to identify and evaluate evidence, especially as pertinent to exegesis.
Instructions
1. Review the Exegetical Position Paper Guidelines Download Exegetical Position Paper Guidelines, SSM Stylesheet Download SSM Stylesheet(cf. SSM Paper Format Sample Download SSM Paper Format Sample& Turabian Style Guide Download Turabian Style Guide), and Sample Exegetical Position Paper Download Sample Exegetical Position Paper as well as the rubric associated with this assignment.
2. Choose one of the following interpretative issues from Genesis 3:14-19:
(a) Who or what does זֶרַע refer to in Genesis 3:15, and how does this word contribute to our understanding of God’s pronouncement upon the serpent (Genesis 3:14-15)?
(b) What does תְּשׁוּקָה denote in Genesis 3:16, and how does this word contribute to our understanding of God’s pronouncement upon the woman (Genesis 3:16)?
(c) What does עִצָּבוֹן mean in Genesis 3:17, and how does this word contribute to our understanding of God’s pronouncement upon the man (Genesis 3:17-19)?
3. Once you have selected an issue, determine the different interpretative options on that issue. Do so by consulting the commentary excerpts provided in the Course Reader. Use these sources to discover and categorize the various positions on your interpretative issue.
4. Create a position chart that summarizes the different positions on that issue. Your chart should contain one column for each position and two rows, one labeled “Evidence” (which lists the things that supporters of the theory would consider evidence) and one labeled “Problems” (which examines each point under “Evidence” and lists any corresponding problems). Each academic resource that you consult for this stage of the assignment must be cited in your chart.
5. Once you have created your position chart, write a paper that accompanies the chart and summarizes your position on the passage. Your paper should contain the following clearly-marked sections:
(a) Begin with an introductory paragraph that clearly states the topic of the paper and briefly summarizes its contents, including your paper’s thesis.
(b) In 500 words indicate what you believe to be the strongest piece(s) of evidence—even if found in the position you disagree with—and the weakest piece(s) of evidence.
(c) In 500-750 words clearly state the position you hold to as well as the reasons you hold to it. What evidence is there for your position? What evidence is there against your position, and how do you weigh it against the evidence in favor of your position?
(d) Finally, end your paper with a concluding paragraph that once again states the topic of the paper and briefly summarizes its contents, including your paper’s conclusions regarding the exegetical issue you have selected.
5. Submit your completed assignment to me electronically, via the course website, in Microsoft Word .doc or .docx format by the due date.
