Purpose: The purposes of the research critiques are to develop critical analysis skills for reading research, and to develop a professional and research writing style.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this series of research critique assignments, the student should be able to:
- discuss key elements in each section of a research article
- write original critical analyses with an appropriate professional writing style
- develop confidence as a consumer of research.
Instructions
- Write a 1 – 2-page paper (double-spaced) that critiques the Results section of the assigned article.
- Your paper should adhere to the guidelines of the APA 7th edition Publication Manual. See additional resources available on Canvas.
- Your paper must be submitted to Turnitin (link on Canvas) by the due date. Please abide by the university policies for academic honesty. Possible violations of academic honesty will be addressed seriously. Late submissions will have points deducted.
- Your paper will be graded for content and writing style. Please see the separate grading rubric.

Here are some considerations for critiquing the Results section. You are not required to address every one of these questions. You should use these questions to guide your critique, and select the ones that are appropriate to the assigned article.
Considering the stated research aims, purpose, or questions, write about the following aspects of the Results section.
- What kind of data were collected/are being reported?
- Are the measures of central tendency and variability consistent with the type of data used?
- Are measures of central tendency reported?
- How are the descriptive statistics reported? Are there any other ways of displaying the data that would have been more helpful?
- Are there any other ways of describing the data that are not present in the article?
- Was the sample size sufficient to make the data trustworthy?
- Do the data point to a correlative or a causal relationship?
- What inferential statistics are used? Why was that statistic chosen? (e.g., comparison of means, determination of association, etc)
- Are there any statistically significant relationships reported? If so, what makes you think that those relationships are also clinically important?
