Research Question: A one sentence research question.
Causal Statement: A one paragraph explanation of how one variable (independent) affects another variable (dependent).
Literature review: 750-1000 word review of the relevant literature on your causal statements. The idea is to cover the major findings and if any consensus exists on your causal relationship.
Theory Section: 500 word explanation of why your independent variable affects your dependent variable and why, in great detail.
Research Design: 500 word description of the data sources you plan to use, whether this is a case study or a large-N analysis, why the data is an appropriate measure of your independent and dependent variables. The source of the data, how it was coded or produced, and why you can trust it.
Analysis: The data, whatever form it takes, and a summarization of the conclusions drawn from your analysis.
In addition, these you should also include the following:
- Cover page with catchy title
- A bibliography page which follows the Chicago Manual of Style.
- Insert page numbers throughout the document
The final paper should be a 10-12 page (Typed, double-spaced) expansion of your research design. I have included my grading rubric for this assignment below.

(What is your central issue? Why is it important? What does the literature say about your topic? You may also want to briefly describe your conclusions up front so your reader can follow along.)

(How are you going to address your policy area? Why did you select these cases/these forms of evidence? What can they tell you that others cannot?)
Presentation of evidence/Conclusion- 20% (5 4 3 2 1 0)
(What did your research uncover? What does this lead you to believe with regard to previous efforts in the policy area? Do you need more information to address the issue? Why/What type?)
Internal Consistency- 20% (5 4 3 2 1 0)
(Did you do what you said you were going to do? Is the method appropriate for the question? Do your conclusions follow from your evidence?)
Overall Clarity/Organization- 20% (5 4 3 2 1 0)
(Does the paper clearly describe the various aspects of the project? Did you present these aspects at the appropriate time?)
