Topic: Perspectives in mental health in relation to early childhood as they relate to child/individual with a disability.
Each part of this assignment asks you to be thoughtful in answering the questions posed below in order to embark you on your journey of thoughtful and reflective use of evidence to inform your practice.
Please ensure you are writing your responses with depth and clarity. You will need to use scholarly resources. Please ensure you are citing accurately and following APA expectations.
Please complete Part 1 of the EIP assignment using WORD (.doc or .docx file format). You may use single-line spacing for the Proposal. Please complete Part 2 of the EIP assignment using WORD (.doc or .docx file), using Arial 12-point font.
Evaluation will be based on completeness of thought and response for each question, evidence of meeting aspects of the identified learning outcomes, and adherence to quality of writing that reflects academic expectations.
You are advised to begin scouting articles right away so you are referring to the best and most relevant articles. This will give you a good foundation for our future work.
Enjoy!
Part 1: Proposal, non-graded Due: see Critical Path
The Proposal is due online on the course site. See the link within the EIP assignment folder within the Assignments & Rubrics menu link.
You will prepare a short 1-3 page Proposal which will clearly articulate your topic, an explanation of how/why this is an integral topic, the questions you have about the topic, a list of 4-6 possible scholarly articles you intend to review (in many cases the articles will likely differ by the time you are done the entire assignment). However, you should review the articles on the list and decide on the strength of each as it relates to your topic. Preference should be given to those that lend depth to your topic. In addition, the scholarly materials should be as recent as possible and no more than 8 years old.
A template for Part 1 will be made available for you to follow and for consistency in planning.
To support your planning you are encouraged to consult the research and think critically by asking yourself questions like:
q What does the research evidence say?
q What are the different research methodologies used?
q How does this knowledge apply to my topic/inquiry question?
q Is this the best available research evidence?
Here are the prompts to respond to within your proposal (there is a template file in the EIP Assignment folder on our course site, which you are advised to use):
1. Topic: ____________________________________________________
**must be related explicitly to the field of disability and current and evolving trends on inclusion and related to the early years or emerging adulthood demographic. Refer to the list of suggested topics. It is in a separate file. If you are interested in a topic not on the list, you will need approval. Please email your faculty as soon as possible to present your idea and discuss.
2. Explanation of topic relevance:
In sentence format, give a brief explanation of how/why this topic is relevant to the field and your future work as a Resource Professional. Be critical.
3. What questions arise for you about this topic? What do you hope to explore?
4. A list of 4-6 scholarly articles/resources you intend to review. Use APA referencing here. These articles should be as relevant to your topic and strong as possibledo not simply list the first 8 articles you see on your topic.
Submission Part 1:
This proposal should be submitted online on our course site on the due date by 11:59pm. See the submission link within the EIP assignment folder, as it becomes available. One word-processed .doc or .docx file submission per person on Blackboard.
You will receive online virtual feedback that will give you go ahead feedback and/or revise feedback to ensure you are selecting a topic that has opportunity for growth and further exploration next term.
Part 2: EIP write-up, valued at 25%
Using Research Knowledge to inform your practice requires you to be critical. Please review the image below to sensitize yourself towards how to engage in critical thinking. Then, read further to better understand how to prepare for this part of the assignment.
EIP requires you to create a coherent, comprehensive review of literature of at least 4-6 sources presented in an integrative and critical fashion, and a reference page (only those 4-6 sources referenced in the paper should be cited), using APA style.
A review of existing literature on a particular issue/topic is like an essay. It will be a review of the literature directly related to the topic or problem under study, followed by an explanation of how your research question grows out of that review. This helps to show how you have identified your own research focus in term of gap in previous research. For many of you, the Winter term will be an opportunity to conduct research on the same topic and explore it further by engaging in interviews with professionals in the field in order to further explore professional and client knowledge.
Steps to completing your Research Knowledge Review:
1. Choose a topic that you are interested in studying (you have done this in your Proposal- Part 1).
2. Formulate an inquiry question that specifically describes what you would like to know about your topic (you have done this in your Proposal, but you can always refine your inquiry questions after you know more about your area through reading the literature). These will help guide your reading. While you will not be explicitly answering these questions, you will be addressing your learning in the summary portion of your assignment.
3. Go to the online library portal, and search for and locate scholarly journal articles/resources that include your topics information. If you need further support you may choose to connect with the dedicated Humber librarian assigned to our program, Mark Bryant. He can be reached via email at: [email protected].
4. Find articles, read the abstracts and, skim the articles to determine if they correspond well to your topic AND inquiry question. (See our course site for resources on How to Read a Scholarly Article).
5. Select at least 15 journal articles and save a copy for your project. For most topics, you will need to choose Canadian context articles. For some topics, Canadian articles may not apply.
6. Read your articles and begin to sort and classify them according to their findings (you can use the KWL methodsee the Critically Reading Handout on our course site within the EIP Assignment folder).
7. Organize your articles by sorting and classifying their findings in a meaningful way, always considering your original topic and inquiry question. Pick the best 4-6 articles.
8. Write an outline for your literature review (see below).
9. Write your review. Avoid direct quotes. In a review, it is best to evidence your understanding, analysis and interpretation through cross-comparison between findings and then citing the author(s) using your own words. This means your write-up will have in-text citations!!! Avoid stating the article name in the body of your work. Simply begin by stating a key point or finding, include an in-text citation and offer some critical analysis to the finding/learning.
10. Revise your review.
Outline for writing your literature review:
1. Introduction (you may use this heading to help organize your writing)
Write an introduction paragraph for your review. This paragraph does two key things:
a. states the topic, demographic (focus on early years or emerging adulthood) and, inquiry questions that you had which you used to inform this review. You will address these questions in the summary.
b. tells the reader specific information on how many articles you reviewed and how you sorted the articles into common themes based on findings (see the results portion of each article).
2. Body (you may use this heading to help organize your writing)
Before you begin this section, be sure that you have sorted your articles into different themes based on the articles findings (sometimes called results). After you sort your articles, it is important to give your sorted groups a descriptive name. The names of the sorted articles will become your sub-headings for each of the paragraphs that you write in the body of your review. The body of your literature review will include:
a. a response overall to the following prompts for your top 4-6 scholarly resources review:
1. What methodology was used in the studies/resources?
2. What are the limitations and strengths of these types of methodologies (quantitative vs. qualitative)?
3. What are the key characteristics of the population involved in the studies?
4. Are there similarities and/or differences between the population and the children/individuals with disability and families I am working with?
5. How might this research be relevant and apply to my practice?
6. Where was the research carried out? E.g. in a rural/urban setting? In Canada, Europe, Australia?
7. Are issues of culture and ethnicity considered in the research?
8. What do the results indicate? If statistics were used, what do these statistics really mean?
b. Theme 1: a paragraph or several paragraphs that describe the first theme that you identified and compare contrast and/or connect across the articles you have selected. Again, include in-text citations to evidence where you located what information and how it evidences the theme you have identified. Then include some analysis of what the readings are implying to evidence your understanding and the impact the findings are purporting.
c. Theme 2: a paragraph or several paragraphs that describes the second theme that you identified and compare, contrast and/or connect across the articles you have selected. Include in-text citations to evidence where you located what information and how it evidences the theme you have identified. Then include some analysis of what the readings are implying to evidence your understanding and the impact the findings are purporting.
3. Summary (you may use this heading to help organize your writing)
This is the last portion of your research knowledge literature review. In this portion, it is important to briefly summarize the main findings from the articles, summarize the questions you had, what you learned because of the review and point out how your inquiry questions were answered or not answered, what the gap iswhat if my questions are all answered? Then, you will need to identify new inquiries that you wish to explore.
Here are some additional prompt questions to respond to in your summary section:
i. How can I apply these findings to my practice? What do I need to consider before doing so?
ii. What do the findings mean to my work and me with children/individuals with disability and families?
For all students, consider how deepening your understanding on the chosen topic contributes to the field in terms of supporting inclusion and advocacy at all levels: micro (individual), meso (interaction between individual and community or services), and macro (broader level like policy) and, what the impact of this research is on the child/individual with disability, family, Resource Professional, and the community in moving the inclusive practice agenda forward etc.
iii. How might what you learned impact the developing individual as they move towards emerging adulthood? Alternatively, if you focused on the emerging adult population, what does the learning mean as the young adult lives, works and interacts with his/her community? In other words, consider the influence on the continuum service, the social and political conditions and, their influence on the need for maintaining or creating: policy, advocacy and/or eclectic practices.
4. References
This is the last section of your submission. It serves as a listing of all references that you cited/mentioned in your paper in APA format. Please make sure that only references cited in your final work are listed here. Other references that you located earlier in the term and may have read but not cited will not be listed in the final write-up. Please use APA style when completing this list.
