Educational leaders have preferred leadership styles that are applied in various situations that arise in school interactions. As such, leaders must be aware of their preferred styles and adjust to each task and situation they are called on to address. One of these tasks is to create district-level and then school-level implementation of this new communication plan.
Read the Khan et.al (2016) article on leadership styles.
Select one of the leadership styles that might best fit the following scenario.
Scenario: Demographic Changes and Communication Plans
One of the first projects the Board of Education has determined to be critical to the beginning of this next school year is an updated communication plan at the district office and school levels. The district’s east side has seen a dramatic increase in Spanish-speaking families as a result of increased opportunities for work in managing the strawberry crops that proliferate the community. An unintended result of this demographic change is that many families have Spanish as their first language and cannot read or speak English proficiently.
Dr. Marcus-Jones has been assigned as the district level project director on this communication project. Dr. Marcus-Jones knows that their preferred leadership style is authoritative but realizes that to get buy-in from all stakeholders, a more participative leadership style is necessary to move the project toward implementation.
The 3-month period for development and implementation of the new communication plan will be from May through July.
Dr. Marcus-Jones sketches out the stakeholders who will be impacted by this new communication plan. The stakeholders include:
Executive leadership team (district office)
District-level project director
District-level implementation team
School-level leaders
School leadership teams
Family representatives

Part 1: Video
Create a 3-minute video in which you:
Describe the selected leadership style and the key theorists associated with that leadership style.
Discuss the strengths of this leadership style, as well as the challenges you might face when using this leadership style.
Explain how your dominant leadership style from Week 1 will be included or set aside in this scenario.
Provide a link to your video.
Part 2: Communication Plan
Create a 3-month (August-October) communication plan in which you:
Discuss specific and actionable plans for how the following will communicate the upcoming changes to various stakeholders impacted by the changes:
Executive team
District-level project director
District-level implementation team
Discuss specific and actionable plans for how the school-level teams and coordinators will communicate the upcoming changes in communications processes to various stakeholders impacted by the upcoming changes.
