Write a four-paragraph (subject-by-subject) comparative analysis essay (no less than 500 words) on the topic listed below. You need an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
You should have all of your required sources or at least the majority of them by now. To receive all points, you must have the required number and types; however, you may have more sources than required.
2. You should receive your Works Cited page back by Wednesday. Go in and correct errors on your Works Cited page before beginning paper. If your Works Cited is correct, your parenthetical references will also be correct. This is an important step. Some of you need to add specific types of sources; some of you haven’t used the minimum; and some of you did not even attempt MLA. This is HUGE in a research paper. Go to the module and look in requirements guide for this; also, I posted a sample page.
3. Remember too that as you write your paper you may find that a source is not as good as you thought. You can delete anything, but make sure you delete it from your Works Cited page. ALSO, remember that if you do delete something, it must be replaced. When a replacement is found, add it to your Works Cited page using the correct MLA format for that particular source. You have to complete the paper with the required number and types of sources.
4. After you have the Works Cited complete, either write notecards (Ch 15- Writing MAtters) for each section of your outline or highlight your sources as discussed in the previous module.
5. Now you are ready to write after you have your sources highlighted or notes on note cards.
6. For right now, let your introduction just be your thesis statement. Thesis statements for research papers can be found in Writing Matters beginning on pages 264-266 or beginning Chapter 16.
7. Write your introduction. Remember that your introduction is hooking your reader’s attention. You may even write a quote that you have found or give some background information. Make sure the last sentence of your introduction is your thesis, just as we have done all semester. Choose a body paragraph that you think will be the easiest to write that would be your first body paragraph after your introduction. Begin with a topic sentence which clearly states the point you are trying to make—education, recreation, or whatever it is. Then write a sentence or two of your own that explains the point/reason stated in the topic sentence. Explain why you are saying this. Add support for what you are trying to say from your sources that you have highlighted or taken notes from. Make sure that you either lead in with your quote or use the citation at the end of this source information. Be sure to write an explanation after a quote that ties the entire point that you are trying to make. You may use several quotes/explanations within your paragraph; however, do not just write, quote, quote, quote. Do not lose yourself in the quoting and the material from the sources.
8. Make sure that as you are taking notes that you use parenthetical references. This is the second component of MLA which is used with your Works Cited page. It is usually the first thing on an entry of your works cited page.
Example:
Smith, John. Living in Las Vegas. Boston: Pearson, 2012.
The parenthetical reference would be (Smith page number). When you put a page number, you don’t put p or pg or anything, just the number. (Smith 200).
9. Also, with your parenthetical references, make sure you have a lead-in. You can’t just drop information in. Check with the attached handout. Some of your notes will be direct quotes, while others will be paraphrases (see previous handouts in modules). Use the requirement book I posted in the module. The first half of the book explains the in-text citations if the Ebook is too overwhelming.
- Integrating Information into your paper:
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do not use parenthetical references within your paper, you will receive an “F” because the paper will be plagiarized. Chapter 17 in Writing Matters explains documentation using MLA if you have never worked with this extensively or if you need to review integrating sources into your text (LB 646).
10. Assignment for the week that will be graded: Copy in the text box a couple of complete BODY paragraphs with a good topic sentence, your sentences, sources information explained by your own sentences. Make sure you include parenthetical citations. I want to make sure you are doing this correctly before you finish the entire paper. I will grade these daily as I receive them so that I will not hold you up writing the paper. Also, include a revised works cited so I can check your body paragraphs’ citations.
