media literacy
- For this assignment, I would like you to analyze news coverage to try to determine if coverage is fair and balance – or biased and, in some cases, inaccurate. Just as importantly, try to figure out why coverage might be slanted. Who benefits? What is the target audience? Is the message successful?
- You may work as individuals or in pairs.
- To carry out this assignment, please follow these steps.
1. Examine the Ad Fontes Media bias chart: https://www.adfontesmedia.com/ (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)
2. Watch a video about the chart:Political media's bias, in a single chart (Links to an external site.)
3. Choose a media outlet that is listed on the chart. Or, if you don’t feel that you have enough outlets to choose from, check out this list of more than 800 media outlets: https://www.allsides.com/media-bias/media-bias-ratings (Links to an external site.).
4. Go to that media outlet’s website and pick out a story. Please choose a story that has been published or broadcast within the last 30 days.
5. Read or watch the report and decide if the coverage is biased. Report your findings in a paper that is three to five pages long or in a video that lasts three to four minutes.
Questions to answer in your report:
a. How does Ad Fontes rate the media outlet you chose? Do you agree with the rating? Why or why not?
b. Was the report you examined biased? If so, please cite your reasons you found bias. Explain your reasons clearly and try to cite evidence for your views.
c. If the report was biased, who do you think benefitted, if anyone?
d. Examine the sources quoted in the report. Are they credible sources? Are they experts? What is the background of the sources? Can you detect bias by looking at the background of the sources who were quoted?
e. How much fact and how much opinion does your report contain? Were any primary sources cited in the report? (Examples of primary sources include: a court document, a police report, an eye witness, a scholarly study, a government report or a subject matter expert – this is someone who has studied the subject extensively and may have an advanced degree related to the subject). Does the report contain any news? Or would you regard it as more noise than news?
f. How did the audience react to the report? Do comments support or criticize the report?
g. Can you get a sense for whether the report reached a wide audience? Or was the report produced just for people who might agree with it?
h. If you were in charge of doing this report, what would you have done differently, if anything?
What if I hate writing papers? Well, you have another option. You may produce a video about media bias.
The video should contain at least five interviews with people discussing media bias. At least one of the interviewees must be someone who works in the media or studies the media. This would include journalists, TV reporters, editors and college professors who teach classes dealing with the media.
We will watch the videos in class. They will be graded mostly on the quality of content. Whether or not the audio and video is clear will also be taken into consideration.
