Art history
In a 4-5 page paper, compare and contrast two paintings, choosing from the pairs of works listed below. This assignment builds on the skills you developed in your museum paper. Whereas before you crafted a formal analysis of one work of art, now you are to do the same for two works, creating a dialogue between them.
Like your museum paper, this assignment does not require any outside research. A successful compare/contrast paper creates a vivid mental image of both works for the reader and captures their essential similarities and differences. It should contain a strong thesis that articulates this relationship in a single sentence. A statement such as, “There are similarities and differences between these works,” is far too vague to be an effective thesis. Similarly, a thesis that lists similarities and differences is not effective. Your thesis should draw on the similarities and differences you observe to formulate an overarching characterization of their relationship.
Set the two works of art in conversation with one another. Use one to help your reader understand the other and vice-versa. A paper that considers each painting in strict isolation cannot achieve an effective comparison. I have posted guidelines to Canvas that describe strategies for structuring a comparison. That document also contains a sample essay.
Works of Art: The works about which you are to write can be found in . Choose one of the following pairs for your compare/contrast:
- Jean-Léon Gérôme, The Bath, c. 1880-85, oil on canvas
Edgar Degas, Leaving the Bath, c.1895-98, pastel on paper - Gustave Courbet, Cliff at Étretat, 1870, oil on canvas
Claude Monet, The Manneporte near Étretat, 1886, oil on canvas - Eduard Manet, Corner of a Café-Concert, 1878-80, oil on canvas
Edward Hopper, Nighthawks, 1942, oil on canvas
Scoring: Papers will be scored with a 0 (unsatisfactory), 1 (satisfactory), or 2 (above satisfactory). Papers can be revised and resubmitted after a consultation with Dr. Levy or a LRC tutor. Revisions will be accepted until the last day of classes.
Formatting: Papers must be word-processed, double-spaced, and have standard margins. Titles of works of art are to be italicized.
