How Can the APUS Library Help Me?
This week you learned how extensive the APUS library truly is. It is not an understatement to say that almost an infinite amount of information is available to you at your fingertips!
After reading the week three Lessons carefully, click on the Library tab in the classroom. Pick ONE of the areas mentioned in the week three Lessons and respond to the following. Number your answers and write in complete sentences. Do not include the questions in your post.
Which area of the library did you select?
How did you get there?
What did you find particularly interesting or helpful about this section?
What did you learn by exploring this section that you did not know already?
Did anything surprise you or particularly impress you?
A sample post is below.
Sample Post
I chose the section “From the Archivist.”
I clicked on the home page of the library and then on the “From the Archivist” tab at the right of the screen.
There is an interesting article on this page. It is called, “Solving Mysteries with Primary Sources: Part II” and was written by the APUS archivist, Justin McHenry. The article tells the story of an eleven-year-old boy, Hugh Jones, who was abducted in 1902 from his home in Virginia. Very little research was readily available about this boy. However, the author was able to find out more about him by diving deep into research and using primary sources. The author explained his research process, such as utilizing sites like familysearch.org, Find a Grave, etc. While there are still unknowns about the boy, the author discovered that Hugh returned to his family two years after his abduction and died of tuberculosis at the young age of 25.
I did not know what a primary source was, so I looked it up using the Ask a Librarian/Find Answers in FAQs tabs in the library. I learned that primary sources provide first-hand information. A complete explanation is provided here: https://apus.libanswers.com/faq/2299
I really liked this quote from the article: “Back to the child Hugh, William’s death certificate gives his address as 315 8th Avenue, which, if that is where they always lived in Roanoke, is only three blocks away from the massive Roanoke railyard. Where I imagine would be a great place for an 11-year-old boy to play and for 65-year-old tramps to scout for their next kidnapping victim.”
Idea for student replies:
Visit the section your classmate discussed in his/her post. Did you notice something about this section that the classmate did not address?
Example:
Joey,
Thanks for the information about the archivist section in the library. I didn’t even know that section existed. Did you happen to notice at the right of the screen, these additional sections: Featured Sources, Primary Sources, and Previous Posts?
I noticed an article under Previous Posts about Martin Luther King, Jr. I have always been a fan of his, so the article caught my eye. The article is called “Martin Luther King Jr and the Civil Rights Movement Primary Sources.” It talks about using first-hand information to study King.
The best part is at the very end of the article. Look at the links listed at the bottom of the page. For example, you can listen to King’s most famous speech here: https://www.npr.org/2010/01/18/122701268/i-have-a-dream-speech-in-its-entirety
Enjoy!
Deborah
Instructions on how to post in this threaded discussion:
This discussion is a bit different from what you might be used to. You will be posting in a group made up of folks who may be in a similar field. How do you know where to post? You decide which thread you should post in based on the program (major) you have chosen (see thread descriptions below). Make your initial post in that thread. If you have not decided what program you will be in, just choose the thread that interests you most. A description of the university’s programs and the schools those programs are in can be found in the link shown here: Schools and Programs at APUS.
Thread 1 – Schools of Arts & Humanities, Education, & Health Sciences. Please see the attached list which shows APUS programs (majors) and the schools they are located in. The general studies program is included here. Make your initial post as a response to my post here. Do not start your own thread. Thanks.
Thread 2 – School of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math. Please see the attached list which shows APUS programs (majors) and the schools they are located in. Make your initial post as a response to my post here. Do not start your own thread. Thanks.
Thread 3 – Schools of Security & Global Studies & Business. Please see the attached list which shows APUS programs (majors) and the schools they are located in. Make your initial post as a response to my post here. Do not start your own thread. Thanks.
Make your initial post mid-week to give folks a chance to respond to you. Make sure all your posts add to and expand the discussion. The highest grades go to those students who really contribute to an energized, stimulating conversation. Be sure to respond to initial posts in the thread that you are in. Feel free to visit other threads as well.
When you respond to others, do not simply compliment them on a job well done. Ask questions and/or provide thoughtful insight and continue the discussion they have started. Look for connections among the students posting in your thread. What commonalities do the students share? What differences do you see? If someone asks you a question, be sure to respond.
