Book Review w/ counterargument, rebuttal ans conclusion.
Details below
The Assignment: The Childrens Book Council (CBC) is compiling a list of the Top 100 DIVERSE Childrens Books that will be given to all parents of elementary school children in America. The purpose of the list is to provide parents with the titles of books that they can read with their children (or have their children read on their own) as a way of promoting diversity and inclusion.
Your job is to evaluate a childrens book for inclusion on this list. You will choose a childrens book (well-known or obscure) and evaluate its merits and weaknesses in light of specific criteria that the CBC administrators believe are worthwhile. You will then make a recommendation about whether or not this title should be included on the Top 100 list. Remember that the administrators will expect you to provide sound and well-developed reasoning for your evaluation and to discuss the book in terms of relevant criteria. You will need to include specific examples to support and illustrate your opinions.
The Steps:
- The first step in constructing an evaluation is to determine the criteria by which you will judge the piece. In this case, the administrators have already compiled a partial list of what they believe would make a childrens book worthy of inclusion. In their estimation, the PERFECT book for their list would:
- Be visually appealing and engaging to its intended audience
- Be objective and without prejudice or bias
- Use language appropriate to the intended audiences reading-level
- Demonstrate effective problem resolution strategies
- Reflect intriguing relationships between its characters
- Promote positive self-esteem among its readers
- Have a solid and meaningful story line
- Include main characters from diverse backgrounds
- Show multi-cultural perspectives
- Promote thinking about values
Of course, if you determine that there is another element that the administrators would value, you can evaluate the book using that criterion as well. The goal is simply to develop a set of relevant criteria by which you will judge your book for inclusion in (or exclusion from) the Top 100 list. Look at the additional criteria resources I provide in Canvas too!
- Next, you will need to write a thesis that expresses two things:
- Your overall judgment of the book (whether or not it should be included on the list)
AND
- The criteria that you considered as you reached your decision (usually three or four are sufficient for this essay)
For example, While some might think the audience for Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut written by Derrick Barnes and illustrated by Gordon C. James is geared to the Black Community only, its engaging storyline centralized on a Black main character, vibrant illustrations, and focus on positive self-image make this book more than worthy of inclusion on list of the Top 100 DIVERSE Childrens Books.
- You will need to provide a clear description of the book, including its intended audience, reading level, general plot, visual elements, and authorship.
- You will use the body of your essay to provide support for your evaluation by using specific examples and reasons. For example, if you are positively evaluating the books visual appeal, you should point to specific examples of the images, colors, and layout it offers its readers.
- Be sure to include a counter-argument. This means that even if your overall evaluation is positive, you should be able to point to an element that either needs to be improved, or that others might view as negative. (If your overall evaluation is negative, you will need to point to an element that some might see as positive.) AND REFUTE THE CA effectively.
- Specifics: MLA page format; no sources necessary except the book itself; 5 pages in length
