Throughout the term, you have presumably received feedback and constructive suggestions and criticism about the fruits of your labors, which you have shared with us all. As you may recall, everyone (including the instructor) was expected to base his or her feedback primarily on academic criteria as follows from the course syllabus:
Learning should be evaluated for its demonstration of close and sound familiarity with readings or other materials that are being considered. Learning should be evaluated for its being coherently sustained and precisely written or articulated. It should be evaluated not for individual opinions per se, but rather for the critical reflection and substantive evidence and/or credible argumentation offered in support of such opinions. It should be evaluated for its engagement with questions, concerns, or disagreements raised by those who have critiqued or appraised it in an earlier iteration. It should be evaluated for thorough and complete documentation of sources, consistent with academic expectations and with all relevant college policies.
In addition, everyone was expected to plan and carry out learning activities that would be consistent with the virtue of craftsmanship as defined by the common reading.
Now the time has come for you to spend significant time and effort reflecting on what you have accomplished in this course. What did you set out to learn? What did you learn? Perhaps there were surprises (pleasant or unpleasant!)? How well did the work you turned in demonstrate such learning?
In addressing these questions, you should keep in mind the evaluation criteria from the course syllabus and the expectations about craftsmanship. You might find it helpful to go through the listed criteria one at a time, looking back at the feedback you received from others (including the instructor) as well as making your own self-assessments.
This is your last chance to demonstrate to the instructor the extent of your understanding of the common readings by relating them carefully and explicitly to the work you have done.
One more thing: At the end of this assignment, you should also include a paragraph or two explaining how your learning this term (which you have been summarizing and evaluating in this assignment) has fulfilled the expectations of the SUNY General Education area of Humanities, which this course fulfills.
In short, through your work this term you should have demonstrated knowledge of the conventions and methods of at least one of the humanities, not counting those humanities that are covered by other relevant SUNY Gen Ed areas (i.e., American History, Western Civilization, Other World Civilization, Social Science).
You may need some preliminary extra help in thinking about what the humanities are in an academic context, in which case you might consult the entry in Wikipedia for Humanities. (From there, you might branch out into further resources as necessary.) Just remember that there is no hard and fast definition, and that the methods and conventions can vary widely as well, and are open to interpretationwhich should make it easier for you to consider some ways that you have dealt with some of them this term in your own work.
As you think about what the humanities can mean, consider how your work this term (which you have been summarizing and evaluating in this assignment) demonstrates your knowledge of certain ideas, approaches, conventions, and/or methods of at least one of the areas considered humanities (not counting Arts, American History, Western Civilization, Other World Civilization, or Social Science). Then, write a paragraph or two summarizing briefly why you think this work effectively demonstrates your understanding of some humanities methods/conventions. Make sure to include this paragraph or these paragraphs near the end of this self-evaluation paper.
Your assignment is to write a thorough 1 page self-evaluation to turn in to the instructor. (You are not expected to turn this one in to the entire class.)
