CourseDescription:
This undergraduate course is designed toexamine the multiple dimensions of human diversity and how it impacts humaninteractions in everyday and work life. The influence of factors such as globalization, technology,communication methods, learning styles, cultural perspectives and approaches toleadership will provide insights into the importance of understandingdiversity. Additionally, throughout this course, you will be receiving anoverview of different aspects of diversity, inclusion, and advocacy. The textsutilized in this course will highlight different aspects of individualdifferences and promote multicultural awareness.
LearningOutcome/Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course,you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of issues of privilege, power,social justice, tolerance/hate, globalization, diversity and the media, andgeneral multicultural awareness.
2. Formulate, articulate, and synthesize personal reactionsand insights gained around diversity and social justice issues.
3. Articulate and synthesize main themes covered throughoutthe semester, in addition to enhancing self-understanding and consideration ofthe impact of diversity issues in future careers.
Students completing this coursewill meet the Domestic Diversity Learning Requirement, specifically thefollowing objectives:
Describe the challenges inherentin a diverse society
Think critically, and with an openmind, about controversial contemporary and historical issues that stem from gender,race, class, ethnic, and religious differences with American society and itscommon institutions
Understand how categories ofdiversity create institutional inequities, intersect with each other, and mayfunction differently in national and transnational contexts
Understand the sociallyconstructed nature of the categories of diversity covered in the course, theinstitutional inequalities they create, the intersections between then and thevalues and practice needed for a more equitable society
Understand how historical legaciessuch as colonialism and slavery have shaped contemporary global realities; how migration,immigration, and differential access to citizenship effect differentpopulations; and how definitions of diversity differ among national states
This is an elective course in the Counseling Minorprogram. The Counseling Minor isappropriate for undergraduate students who may be interested in careers inprofessional psychology (counseling psychology, clinical psychology, or school psychology),counseling (school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, mental healthcounseling, or related fields such as social work or nursing.
