Background of the Study – This section provides an overview of the importance of studying [your topic]. The background section of Chapter 1 provides a brief history of the problem and a summary of results from the prior empirical research on the topic. It introduces a connection between the context of the study and the value of performing the study. (Minimum 3-4 paragraphs)
Statement of the Problem – This section addresses the conditions to be examined in this study. The statement of the problem is developed based on the need or gap defined in the literature. Discuss why you are undertaking this study. What problem exists that your study will seek to resolve? What do you intend to accomplish? This section should clearly describe what problem you intend to solve with the results of your research. (Minimum 3-4 paragraphs)
Purpose of the Study - This section describes what the researcher intends to accomplish with respect to the problem. The purpose begins with one sentence that identifies the research methodology and design, target population, variables (quantitative) or phenomena (qualitative) to be studied and geographic location. The broad purpose of the study is to do what exactly? Will your study identify a model for example? Who will benefit from your study (e.g., organization, community, industry, group of individuals)? (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs)
