Introduction
Forgiveness is a critical aspect to human interaction allowing individuals and groups to acknowledge issues as they arise and work towards providing effective communication even if anger or frustration are still present. Hess and Cameron (2006), defined forgiveness as “a response to perceived negative experiences in the workplace in which the propensity toward harbored negativity is displaced, or dissolved, allowing the forgiver to refrain from causing the offender harm even though he or she believes it is morally justifiable to do so” (P. 172). Organizational forgiveness is accepting that a wrong was done and being able to move past that wrong to maintain productivity and efficiency. Anger and frustration may still be present, but that anger and frustration does not affect productivity. As written in Ephesians 4:32, be kind, tenderhearted, and forgive as He has forgiven us (NIV, 1978.2912).
LTL Trucking and Scripture
The text described an altercation between union personnel and management that lingered for years before the two individuals were able to fully forgive and move on. Now they were able to be productive during the trying times, in the end forgiveness prevailed but was slightly delayed. These two workers were able to forgive each other for the altercation, not forget, and were able to be productive in their interactions even before they noted the errors in their ways and moved on. According to Noreen and MacLeod (2021), forgiving provides an array of positive benefits to the forgiver as it can decrease anxiety along with associated health concerns incurred by the added stress of the situation. Forgetting may take time, but as long as some amount of forgiveness is present the parties can move forward productively and efficiently. As written in Matthew 6:15, if you do not forgive others for their sins, they will not forgive you and He will not forgive either (NIV, 1978.2012).
Forgiveness can be interpreted in a variety of ways depending on the message, the medium, and those involved in the altercation or issue. It is a unique “theological or philosophical construct that might be characterized distinctively by every person and, in this manner, regarded as murky and messy by the leaders and managers and also for its value to employees and different stakeholders” (Dahiya and Rangnekar, 2020, p. 2174). The issue noted with LTL Trucking explained in the text provided a positive outcome, eventually, but compared to what is recommended in the scripture many differing factors were present. As the scripture recommends turning the other cheek, forgiving those who will forgive you, as well as the Golden Rule of treating others as we wish to be treated, are all excellent ideologies to adhere to. Nowhere does the scripture discuss performing the tasks over time, this should be a rapid process allowing all parties to move on. The facts were similar in the overall meaning of forgiving each other, but the breakdown was in the time frame these two allotted for full forgiveness, a few years is unacceptable.
Organizational leadership shall ensure an atmosphere of kindness and forgiveness is present to enhance positive and rapid results when such issues arise. According to Verma (2019), leadership must be cognizant that forgiveness is a complicated and complex subject requiring all parties to acknowledge and harness the courage to offer respect to those individuals who deserve it as well as those who do not. An organizational atmosphere integrated with a concept of open communication and clear expectations allows the workforce to be aware that leadership requires an attitude of caring and understanding towards each other. As written in Colossians 3:13, forgive those who have complaints against you as you would have them do for you and as the Lord has forgiven you, you must also forgive others (NIV, 1978.2012). The values displayed in the text are similar to those displayed in the scripture, just the timing is different and more specific. According to the scripture all shall receive forgiveness regardless if they are deserving or not. Contemporary business shall follow the scripture and promote a workplace atmosphere geared towards compassion and forgiveness. They amount of forgiveness found in modern business varies based on current leadership.
Conclusion
Forgiveness is a critical aspect to human interaction allowing individuals and groups to acknowledge issues as they arise and work towards providing effective communication even if anger or frustration are still present. The scripture recognizes the importance of forgiveness in a timely manner regardless of who is at fault. Such a task is difficult in modern business as well as modern society. All aspects of business, as well as society, would and could benefit from more of an influence based on a Christian perspective. Leadership shall promote such a perspective, such influence, in their daily interaction with their staff.
