child abuse and neglect
Background For this assignment, you will be required to a movie from the list below. You will then be asked to summarize and provide a critical assessment of the abuse shown. Additional research and citations will be necessary to support your points. Make sure to use reputable sources such as journals, recommended links in Week 1 or other child abuse resources. STEP 1 Choose a movie to watch from the list below. These movies are available from multiple providers (Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube). However, it is possible, you may need to purchase the movie. That is a requirement of this assignment. You may not choose a film or show that is not on this list. Precious – Precious Jones, an inner-city high school girl, is illiterate, overweight, and pregnant…again. Naïve and abused, Precious responds to a glimmer of hope when a door is opened by an alternative-school teacher. She is faced with the choice to follow opportunity and test her own boundaries. Prepare for shock, revelation and celebration. Lion – A five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. This Boy’s Life – Set in 1950s, this moving drama is a story of a young boy and his divorced mother. When his mother marries, the boy must struggle to endure a hostile relationship with his stepfather. Room – Held captive for 7 years in an enclosed space, a woman and her young son finally gain their freedom, allowing the boy to experience the outside world for the first time. The Glass Castle – When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Tale – A woman filming a documentary on childhood rape victims starts to question the nature of her childhood relationship with her riding instructor and running coach. Spotlight – This critically acclaimed film chronicles the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered a decades-long cover-up of child abuse within the local Catholic Archdiocese. The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez – 6-part docuseries about a boy’s murder and the trials of his guardians and social workers prompt questions about the system’s protection of vulnerable children. This is the longest movie, but it is an incredible view inside a department of child welfare. If you have interest in doing this work, I highly recommend watching this series. STEP 2 Write a 6-8 page typewritten, double-spaced paper using APA format using the following outline. At least 3 professional (scholarly journals, textbooks, etc.) resources/references must be cited, preferably no more than 10 years old plus references for local and national resources. Use the headings that are bolded below. Do no list the bullets in your paper. Just answer these questions in essay format. It is possible that there are 1-2 questions that don’t apply to your movie.
