Your final written assignment for this class is to produce a personal narrative that examines your identity formation up to this point in your life.
- Where do I come from?
- Who do I come from? Where did they come from?
- What communities (work, religious, school, military…) do I belong to?
- What are my extracurricular activities and hobbies?
- What specific events in my life define me thus far?
- One specific event in the last year is the massacre of 23 people at an El Paso Walmart based on their ethnic identity. They were, according to the shooter, “a Hispanic invasion.” How does this unspeakable act of cowardice impact your own identity formation?
- Conclude with a statement that defines who you are at this moment. (See Part C below for specific instructions)
- You must open the essay with an introductory paragraph. In this paragraph, provide a good working definition of the term “identity” and cite the source of your definition (you will lose points if you omit this). Provide a brief explanation of who you are and how you identify, the culture(s) you have been raised in and how, if at all, culture has defined who you are up to this point in your life, and your plans for the near future.
- Then answer the questions above in a logical order. Your response to those questions must be developed paragraphs that tell a story, that narrate your story up to this point and NOT simply two or three lines of brief descriptions. Edit very carefully for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors because I will count off!
- You should have a conclusion as well, this paragraph should recap the entire essay and discuss what, if anything, you learned about yourself and Mexican American culture and why it’s important to learn more about your own culture and other cultures. Include a statement of who you are at this very moment that incorporates one of the following: a quote from a book or movie, an image or photo of a non-human that symbolizes who you are, a poem, lyrics from a song, etc. BE CREATIVE!
- Format: 3-4 pages, 12pt font Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1.25 marginal all around.
- Develop an understanding of how identity formation is developed.
- Develop a better understanding of your culture and other cultures.
- To become aware of how important positions (race, class, gender, and sexuality), beliefs, perspectives, politics, religion, places, music, etc. inform identity formation.
- Understand why you picked the things you did to share.
- Learn how various identities and practices are categorized and defined by you and by others.
- Make sense of the positives and negative stereotypes that accompany identity formation.
- Sharing with and informing others about how one’s cultural identity formation fits into the larger nation.
