Make sure you read the instructions for this assignment carefully as well as look over the sample student papers provided. I have also provided examples of topics so that you know how to come up with a suitable topic. Your title should include the US and another country (not a continent like Africa or Europe).

– When choosing a country to compare your issue to, make sure you have enough peer-review journal articles on this topic as it relates to this country. It is not useful if you email me a topic like “HIV/AIDS among gay men” or “HIV/AIDS among women” which are way too broad in scope and do not include the US and a foreign country in the title. Or you include a country but have not checked to see if you will be able to find enough peer-review journal articles on this topic for this country.

– When contacting me for approval of your proposed topic, a reminder to include a list of peer-review journal articles (using APA style only) that you have located for the US and your comparison country.

– A common mistake I see students make each semester is that they do not use enough peer-review journal articles, so their paper lacks depth and substance as a result. This will affect your grade.

– Also, students often do not read the handout Professional Writing 1.docx and do not prepare their bibliography correctly.

– Make sure you identify organizations, websites, movies, books etc that are specific to your topic and relate to the US and to another country.

You need at least five peer-review journal articles if you are a HEA 211 student and at least 10 peer-review journal articles if you are are a HEA 511 student. Bear in mind these are minimum requirements. If you are striving for a good grade, use more. Each reference on your list needs to be written out in full using the APA style and be listed in alphabetical order. This is your bibliography and it must follow the APA style and be written out properly. Do not send me attachments or copies of the articles or links to articles. Make sure you have an equal number of articles for both countries and that you have enough information to address each component of this assignment. Do not copy and paste citations from the journal article! Not all journals use the APA style. There are several citation styles used in professional journals. You must use the APA style in this course. I frequently see messy bibliographies with a hotchpotch of references using different citation formats because they were just copied and pasted. That is not acceptable. Make sure you print up and follow the handout “Professional Writing 1”. All you have to do is follow that handout on how to correctly cite sources and how to prepare a bibliography using the APA style. You risk losing valuable points if you do not follow these instructions.

Again, please make sure you research your topic carefully and follow the instructions before running it by me for approval. If it is evident you have not, I will refer you back to read this announcement. Every semester a couple of students will send me a half baked title, or no bibliography, or references that consist of articles obtained from a google search, or a list with only a few peer-review articles, or their bibliography is a mess.
