film analysis project
1) The first step in your film analysis project select the film you want to analyze. This can be any Hollywood film in any genre. Introduce the film, giving the title, date of release, and the name of the director. Briefly describe the plot, identifying the equilibrium, disruption, and equilibrium. As part of the description, identify the main characters and give the names of the actors who play them in parenthesis.
For example: In You’ve Got Mail, directed by Nora Ephron, Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) is the happy owner of a small, but successful local bookstore [equilibrium]. Her business is threatened when a bookseller chain owned by Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) opens a mega-store nearby [disruption]. Kelly and Fox fight over the new store, while at the same time conducting an anonymous romance online. Though Kelly’s bookstore closes, she and Fox discover each other’s identities and fall in love in real life [new equilibrium].
2) After this introduction, identify the genre your film belongs to. In the case of our example, you might say: You’ve Got Mail is a romantic comedy.
Then you will outline the characteristics of the genre as discussed in the textbook. Be sure to give credit to textbook editor John Belton, as you have seen him cited throughout this canvas shell.
3) Now discuss how your film upholds and/or undermines the characteristics typical of the genre(s).
