The relationship between health literacy and quality of life among frequent users of health careservices: a cross-sectional study
Quality of life and health literacy are two very components in health care. However, it is said thatthe link between the two of them is not clear. The amount of people who have low health literacyis a very high number and many of those people are frequent users of health care services andsuffer from chronic illnesses. This study wanted to find the relationship between low healthliteracy and quality of life including the mental and physical components of it, among therecurrent users of health care services who suffer from a chronic disease. The study includespatients from a larger project, VISAGES. The participants were identified by their primary caredoctors who used a software program to do so. This included 38 family physicians who used acomputerized list of the patients to find who used healthcare services the most. The age rangeof the participants were 18-85 years old and they had to have a chronic disease. However, severe psychiatric illnesses, cognitive impairment that was serious, and those who had aprognosis that was under a year were excluded from the study. Informed consent forms werecompleted by all participants of the study. The data for this study about the participants wascollected before they were even considered for the study. Health literacy was calculated by theNewest Vital Sign (NVS), which use an ice cream nutrition label with six questions about it.There was a total of 247 participants in this study. With the numbers that they came up with, itwas found that there was no link between quality of life and health literacy.
This article goes against everything I have learned in this course and many others. However, itdoes have me thinking about some topics covered in chapter one of the text. For example, it isstated that hospitals recognize this disparity by conducting outreach and education programsfor the medically underserved (Sultz & Young, 2014, p.20). Here, they are talking about howthe costs of everything in healthcare has increased leaving many people without the properresources to get the proper treatment. Also, how preventative care is not the main focus ofdoctors. If we think deeply about this, many people who cannot afford healthcare are facing adisparity of some sort whether it be low income, their age, or their race. According to the reportfrom the National Action Plan (NAP), these are the people most at risk for low health literacyand overusing health services (2010). If health literacy has to do with the way people obtain, process, and understand basic health information (Osborne, 2013, p.2), then that means if theydo not have health literacy and they are unable to do so. My point is that if a person is unable tomanage their own care, how can they possibly have a good quality of life? With poor healthliteracy, potential life-threatening mistakes can be made. This can include someone not beingable to read their prescription correctly and overdosing or a mother not getting the properprenatal care. Because of their low health literacy, the quality of their life is being compromised.
