Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" Annotated bibliography
Instructions for assignment—-
Assignment Description:
Each student will create an annotated bibliography using the FIVE provided secondary sources for Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”
The goal of this assignment is to 1) understand the primary text and varying interpretations of it; 2) demonstrate this comprehension by providing a brief summary of the critical interpretations, and 3) engage with the primary text and the critical conversation around it by providing evaluation of the critical interpretations. Ideally, this process will allow students to provide their own intelligent critical approach to the literature.
Each of the five entries of the annotated bibliography has three distinct parts:
- A Bibliographical Entry in Correct MLA Format
- Provide the correct information for the source. Use your textbook and/or Purdue OWL (Links to an external site.) to verify.
- TIP: use the Cite button to copy/paste this information. View image here.
- You should also include the primary textbut you do not need to summarize or evaluate. Instead, simply type Primary text. To cite it, provide author, title, and the URL to the PDF from Blackboard.
- A Summary of the Source
- Focus on the source’s thesis and main ideas. This should be a fairly succinct restatement or overview–in your own words–of the content of this source. Remain neutral; do not project your personal views or opinions. The summary is written in third person and in the present tense.
- An Evaluation of the Source
- Evaluations can take on several methods depending on the purpose. For this assignment, evaluations should address the impact the respective source has on your own understanding/interpretation of the primary text. It should be more than “I agree with this source” or “I disagree with this source.” However, you may use such a response as a launching point for your evaluation; just be sure to adequately support why you agree or disagree. You may also decide to compare/contrast with other sources.
