Confession: Roxane Gay is one of my favorite writers. She is an author, professor, editor and commentator. She is the author of the following books: Bad Feminist, Ayiti, Difficult Women and the memoir, Hunger. Research her, there is so much more to know. The extremely personal and poignant Hunger caused me to press “pause” numerous times in my reading. Her writing style is sparse and clean, absent of ‘big’ words and complex sentence structures.
I study her style and approach to storytelling. Students often ponder how to become a better writer. The simple answer is to READ MORE. Articles, chapters, essays and other writings are simply stories. He latest short commentary (story), “The World, Wide Open,” which is the focus of your Bonus Assignment does not disappoint in that regard. It also provides an opportunity for students to examine social issues and problems through the lens of Social Science disciplines. Read the article, then read it again. It is brief, yet there is a lot to unpack.
You are being called upon to (1) identify a social issue or problem you noted from the article and justify/explain your selection – why is it one? This is your first paragraph. And (2) provide realistic solutions for your immediate community and our larger society as it relates to ways to effectively address it. This is your second paragraph. There is not one specific issue in the article. There are several. Your focus should closely relate to something we have addressed in THIS course. Finally, you MUST speak the language. Make use of terms, definitions, and concepts that have been covered in the course thus far. They must be incorporated in your essay.
Develop your essay using two paragraphs, doubled spaced, using 12 size, Times New Roman font style. Develop and save the essay in Microsoft Word. Then upload the document in the dropbox in D2L.
This Bonus Assignment MUST be completed in two paragraphs and AT LEAST one full page. Since students typically ask about length, it should be about 350 words. DO NOT focus on the exact word count, my assessment will be based on the quality of the content and your critical examination. Follow directions.
