Individuals that share the opinion or belief thatusing available outlets or means to them to further a political ideal ormovement is somehow inherently wrong and/or choose to criticize those whochoose to use their platform to educate others are either blinded to both sidesof an issue or live within their own privilege. Expecting someone to not use asignificant platform such as music, art, social media, film, or any otherpublic engagement available to them is being willfully ignorant and part of thegreater problem that affects our social fabric.
Thosethat build a wide ranging audience and reach with their craft have the uniqueability to speak for many that dont have the opportunities or reach that theydo. They can affect many more people by sharing ideas, political or not, withthose who consume their particular media. This in turn creates conversationswithin the environments of the individuals themselves. Although I may notattend a Malcom X speech, by knowing someone who has, I may be exposed to histalking points and persuaded to join his side of the debate. By having someoneclose to me advocate for an ideal, it brings the issue closer to me and makesit more real.
As apolice officer, one of the more recent examples of this that directly affectsme and how people perceive me is when Lebron James commented on the recentshooting involving a teenage girl who was actively assaulting someone with aknife. Although I may not agree with his point of view, by him making that statementit creates dialogue between myself and members of the community with whom Iinteract with on a daily basis because they choose to enter into thatdiscussion with me. Thereby, Mr. James created opportunity for communityengagement and provides me with the ability to give my side of the debate thatnormally would not have been available to me because his reach affected thosewithin my sphere of influence.
Inclosing, I do believe that those with the ability and wherewithal to use theirplatforms to speak out in support of or against issues of a political natureshould do so but I also believe that we have the freedom of speech in theUnited States which means the freedom to not say anything at all. Each personschoice should be left to them to make and they shouldnt be punished orridiculed for speaking out or choosing not to speak out. Freedom is a baseconcept of our society.
