SHOULD BE RELATED TO New York
Prompt: You will use one of the analytical frameworks presented in class (either Peterson’s structuralist political economy framework OR Stone’s urban regime analysis) to describe and analyze two episodes of urban politics from the Abu-Lughod readings from New York Chicago, Los Angeles or the “One Mile” reading from Caros The Power Broker, all posted to the content section of BlackBoard.
The two episodes must be separate cases – they should either all be from roughly the same time period or developmental phase, but from different cities (NY, Chi, or LA), or they should both be from the same city, but from a different time period or developmental phase.
Assignment: Describe and analyze each policy case using either Peterson’s structuralist political economy framework OR Stone’s urban regime analysis). First, describe the basic historical facts of each episode. Approximately when did these events occur? In which city? What was the policy building or doing? Second, explain how politics worked in your episode through the analytical lens of ONE of the theories.
Use the same theory for each case by applying the theorys concepts and factors to the historical facts of the episode.
If you are using the political economy framework, you should discuss city interests and the role of limited city power and/or choice (e.g. political authority or cities in competition for economic investments). If you are using urban regime analysis, you should discuss groups forming a coalition, resources, the agenda and what groups are getting out of it, and perhaps the role of a political entrepreneur or leadership.
