This assignment requires students to select five (5) readings from one (1) Module in Winter term (Modules 4, 5, 6). Students will be completing a synthesis across the five readings within a single Module from Winter term. This assignment requires students to make an argument—your argument is what you argue the five readings collectively offer us as students of WGST regarding a particular topic in the course (the focus of the Module would be the broader topic)
Steps:
First, decide which Winter module you would like to focus on as the broader topic; Modules 4, 5, and 6 are from the Winter term. Second, focus on the specific topics in the Module selected. Decide which five readings you would like to focus on from the Module. Remember, the readings do not have to be from the same lecture week but do have to be from the same Module. Third, to successfully synthesize the five sources, begin by grouping sources by topic and looking for connections across the readings. For example, look for overlapping ideas, where sources agree with each other, and divergences. Any unanswered questions or identifiable limitations of the readings? Fourth, begin to make an argument based on the readings and what they tell us about the broader topic (the Module’s focus is the broader topic). Fifth, after you understand what the sources are arguing, you want to construct your body paragraphs in a way that acknowledges different sources and highlights where you can draw new conclusions. Next Steps: Begin with an introductory paragraph that addresses standard introductory paragraph requirements and that has a clear thesis statement, “Drawing upon Author (year), Author (year), Author (year)….I argue that…. 3 Each body paragraph (body paragraphs should deal with separate ideas, and do not have to be limited to three body paragraphs) should offer a discussion that maintains and supports your thesis and effectively demonstrates comprehension, application, and discussion of ideas from the sources. The concluding paragraph should bring together ideas and offer your original conclusion of what the five sources discussed tell us as students of WGST about the topic. The conclusion could also include questions for future discussions, directions, etc., relevant to WGST and the topic.

Other important information
1. We are looking for a synthesis; this means that students can take ideas from multiple authors (five) and make an argument based on the ideas from the authors. The argument is what the five readings collectively offer us as students of WGST regarding a particular topic in the course (the focus of the Module would be the broader topic). 2. A maximum of two short (forty words or less) quotes may be used in this assignment. 3. Use first person only. Do not use second person. 4. When paraphrasing or drawing upon an author, remember to cite. While paraphrasing does not require page numbers for in-text citing, it is encouraged.5. All work from our textbook should be dated 2018, regardless of their original year of publication. 6. Do not use titles of readings or the textbook in text. Refer to readings by author and year. The year will always be 2018 for our textbook readings.
