CONCERT REPORT GUIDE
The Concert Report must consist of three basic parts: introduction, body of paper, and conclusion. Your reports should be examples of your very best writing skills. Always have someone else proofread your work for errors, and read your paper out loud for continuity.
Introduction: This is where you discuss the facts about the performance – what, where, who, when and why. Mention a single overall point that you would like to make about this performance, and say how you are going to go about proving your point.
Body: Here is where you present your “evidence” to support your thesis by describing what you experienced at the performance. Do not give a blow by blow account. Instead, try to identify specifics that make this performance unique: instruments used, traditional/non-traditional aspects, interaction of musicians to each other and the audience, levels of audience participation. MOST IMPORTANTLY, DISCUSS THREE REPERTOIRE (TUNES) INCLUDING EACH TITLE, USING AT LEAST FIVE MUSICAL TERMS, for example, timbre, tempo, melody and more.
You are required to write A PARAGRAPH FOR EACH MUSICAL SELECTION, which means you may not include brief descriptors of several tunes lumped together. Indicate whether you like or dislike the music you choose to discuss and defend your position. Describe what you perceive and imagine while listening. Were you emotionally moved? Express your opinion, but don’t forget to explain your reasons.
Conclusion: Sum up your experience. I am interested in your ability to contextualize the event as a cultural experience. What did it mean to the performers? What did it mean to the audience members? What did it mean to you and your view of this group/genre/culture/community?
GRADING PARAMETERS
